Just stumbled across this thread as I’m looking to rebuild my 4200 engine ( knocking noise at 1500rpm when hot)
Are there any updates? I see by mot history it’s not on the road since 2020
Cheers

I'm guessing Loz is out of the UK again and guessing it's still down at Sports Italia.
What kind of knocking noise @10bhp ?
Do you have good oil pressure ?
What checks have you done ?
Phil.

Have you bought yourself a project car?

Is it only knocking when warm or other issues as well ? We love a good project story and pictures are always good.

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like a knock from cylinder 4, oil analysis clear, good oil pressure, compression ok, runs perfect up to rev limiter other than noise / knock.
Bit of a mystery to be honest

Thanks for the welcome.
Only noticeable when hot, when oil thins I suppose, runs perfect otherwise just the noise.
I’ll add some photos as I go.

Yes guys all done , needs a detail as its been sitting for a couple of years, Matte gave it good clean but my ocd wont let me take pics of a minutely dirty car, so watch this space they will be forth coming ..........................to clarify some earlier points ...........not a single drop of water came inside the car hence all the electrics were never immersed , same goes for upper engine electrics .................this was a pure hydro lock of just one cylinder ................as a precaution the engine builders advised renewal of all pistons , Which entail small end bearings and conrods and rings ..........she's had 8 of these , new big end shells and one time user bolts , crank tested and checked, some new valves and Lambda sensors , repainted and refurbished rocker boxes , and Most importantly Ashleys attention to detail , so in theory she;s back , well in fact she's in better shape than before .

Probably close to £10K's worth of work and parts , I could have saved a good few thousand by using available used engines from elsewhere but my priority was always to keep the car as original as possible with the corresponding engine numbers to the logbook .........Covid played its part in the delays with factory lockdowns and delayed parts etc but its certainly worth the wait ..............and i can get on with satisfying my ocd tendency finally ................500 miles to run her in and back to Matts for oil filter/change and further inspection by Ashleys eagle eye .

Excellent news.
Like you I invested in some new big end shells for the Mrs, which I then crank tested.
Money well spent, better shape than ever too.

Seems age has taken its toll , and its time we looked for a decent 4 seater with boot space , both Mercs have served us well last 10 plus years but seeing as im still disjointed over the way the Europeans treated the UK over and leading up to Brexit I cant bring myself to buy another German car albeit they are the ultimate in terms of Ronseal , so perhaps its also time to have a crack at a Quatroporte ..........as the base family car

There was me hoping you would support the British Car industry and be getting a Morris Oxford.

Best you learn to spell “Quattroporte” first then tho before you buy one, Loz.
Till then, stick to your Grandsporte.
