Fitting Centre Caps to 20 inch wheels

Okay, so I decided to go a bit crazy and purchase four new OEM centre caps for my recently purchased Maser GT.

Feel it will really refresh and lift the look of the 20" inch wheels.

The ones that were fitted are over 5 years old and showing their age (grey trident logo completely faded on some, scratches etc). It was annoying the **** out of me.

Has anyone ever replaced the centre caps themselves? Imagine it shouldn't be too easy as they're plastic and clip on. Correct procedure?

Not sure how to get the old ones off.

Any help appreciated.

You'll probably want to refurb the wheels after fitting!

Beat way to remove the old ones - remove the wheels and give the centres a firm tap from behind. I usually use a hammer handle or screwdriver handle. Thoroughly clean the wheel centres, push the new caps in gently and another sharp tap with the side of your fist should locate them firmly.

Remove the wheel and use a piece of wood or the shank handle of a hammer to push them out from behind. That way there is no scratches caused to the wheel trying to lever them out.

Just done this for a friend on a new Ghibli... the centre cap locating clips are very fragile... be sure they are all on the inside before you give it a good thump with the heel of your hand..

As I recall they need to be rotated until all the pins are lined up.. then you're good to go..

No idea how to get them off again..

Agree that the centre caps look worn fairly quickly. Not sure why. Out of interest, how much were they?

To get mine out, I simply got a tweezer behind it and flicked it out. Simples.

To install just pop back in.

Okay great. Thanks Chris. Sounds like an easier solution.

Not keen to take off every wheel, but at the same time, don't want to scratch the rims.

On mine I found the Best way is to puncture old cap with small sharp screw driver, screw self tapper into middle & pull out with pliers, no risk of damaging paint. Took 10 mins all round.

Cheers

I was about to write the same, I use a bradawl to puncture the old ones, they're knackered so are going in the bin anyway. No need to take the wheels off.

centre cap maser less.jpgJust an update.

Finally got around to changing the centre caps over to shiny new OEM ones.

Very happy. The pliers wrapped in sticky tape worked a treat!

Amazing how something so simple can really lift the appearance.

Many thanks to all!
