Ferrari Roma - Test Drive

When looking to place an order for a Roma a few months back, I worked on a purchase price of £200k, and then receiving circa £110k back after 3 years and 10k miles. So, a cost of £30k per year.
Over that period and mileage, servicing costs would be low, and the car would be under warranty for any failures.
But it's the equivalent of buying, say, a California T now at about £90K and then throwing it in the bin in three years time. And when viewed like that, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Hence I've postponed my order.

Those are not man maths that I could live with either.
90k for 10k miles?
That’s £9/mile! That would cost me £450 to get to work and back every day, plus fuel!

I’d much rather be the man that buys it for 110k and 10k miles, and sells it 3 years later (still in warranty, it’s 7 years?) for 90k.

Even then, still too rich for me.
I need to work harder!

Roma is a nice car, but it’s not that nice.

It is eager, to be fair but I wonder if the writer missed the point a touch. It's supposed to be a car that is capable of performing in several situations and does a great job of being a GT, a sports car, a useable daily etc in one package. That Ferrari UK test car seems to have delay with it's electronics and gizmos which i've seen mentioned in several reviews. I think it's an early one and that this has already been addressed, the one I drove was Apple Mac fast.

I expect it would eat the Aston and Bentley on a fast b-road, carries more on a Euro trip than the 911 can in its frunk, is more involving to drive that all of them and for me, looks the best of the bunch. The 911 is no doubt quicker and I would have one (i've had 5 911 turbos in my life to date) but the on the special-ometer, can't put your finger on it passion-meter, the Roma tears it apart. A bit like there are better cars than a Stradale but I'd still have that (again).

I had a Portofino for a weekend, the Roma is much better. The Portofino is a nice car too though and I appreciate some like the wind in their hair (or sun on their bald bonce) and given the price differential while the Roma is so new, the Portofino appeards a smarter purchase at this point in their respective depreciation curves.

All the average reviews should lead to faster depreciation which means it will get to my price window faster. I'm pleased about that as I see one in my future.

The PortoFino M has the drive train from the Roma so it is, apparently, much nicer to drive than the standard PF.

Bearing in mind the likely ‘lift with it’s cable cut’ depreciation of the MC20, which would you rather have at £100-120k, an MC20 or a Roma? I appreciate the Roma is more of a GT car but as an all round package, MC20 or Roma?

I'd rather an MC20 but I'd wager that it won't plummet in value like you think. The numbers and exclusivity are low enough, and the reviews are so good that I think it will buck the trend for some time to come.

The Roma, on the other hand, will dump serious value in the first 3 years then settle but it won't start until there are few more on the road yet.

On balance, I think you are about right regarding MC20 depreciation however, some Marques always seem to plummet; Astons, Jaaags, to some extent McLaren and Maserati to name but 4. It’ll be interesting to watch, but I can’t see the MC20 taking too many sales off Ferrari.

The MC20 will be more likely to takes sales off Mclaren, in my humble.

I'd need to drive them but, at first blush, I'd rather have a Portofino M than a Roma.

By which time there may be an Alfieri in the mix?

Personally, not a fan of the Roma’s styling. I think it looks really bland and a bit bloated from some angles.

I quite like it apart from the ‘washing basket’ front grille. I really don’t like that bit.

There was an all black one parked at Vilamoura Marina yesterday at the boat show. Perhaps the colour didn’t help, but to me it had no wow factor. Could have been Japanese or German rather than Italian. Saw it driving later and again, didn’t blow my skirt up

I like the Roma a lot but I’d never pay the sort of money they’re asking for it.
Second hand 4 st Strads, Mc’s or indeed Qpv gts would give me as much pleasure and more practicallity .

Just after I saw the Roma, I saw one of the updated Ftype coupes in black - I thought it was far more eye-catching

Really, I think the updated F-type looks too generic and almost Audi. The Roma, in the right colour, is a truly beautiful design, whereas the original F-type was but for me, now has lost it's edge. Jaguar did this many moons ago with the E-type too, with tseries 1 being superb and then they started ruining it with chrome, open headlights and such baubles.

There is little doubt there is a Roma in my future. Just not for a couple of years or until they have halved in value, which is sadly inevitable.
