looks like he'll have to slum it in one of his multi million pads

Bet the rest of the field are happy that as someone else will stand a chance of winning. Although its not really winning if Lewis isn't racing. Hollow victory for someone.

Isn’t/wasn’t George Russell their test driver? I’d like to see him in that Merc.

Yes he is managed by Toto Wolff but is contracted to Williams still so cannot see him being able to race for Mercedes when they are chasing points. I believe that he will drive for Mercedes when a place becomes available though. Or that's what Toto said in an interview.

Which is why I can understand why Mercedes didn't put Russell in Bottas' seat. I know he's a safe number two but Russell would do a far better job than Albon in amassing team points.
Perez might be out of luck sadly with Albon getting a podium.

Russell is probably the future for Mercedes and there were discussions about releasing him from his Williams contract to replace Bottas but Merc want all titles and it was decided that Bottas would be more likely to amass points than a relatively inexperienced young driver as it turns out this year the car was so dominant they could have run him this year and still got all titles. Russell has another year on his Williams contract and although Toto & Merc are in a strong position to influence Williams they are a separate team with their own challenges but it could happen.

Vandoorne is the official Merc test driver this year so he must be in the driving seat (no pun intended) for the drive but this is F1 and politics can play a significant part in any decision either way it should be interesting to see how someone else handles the car.

This is going to be great, Russel can finally show what he has got Vs. the likes of Le Clerc and Verstappen

I don't think it's that simple. The extra 1sec a lap comes from practice, set-up, getting to know the limits etc which he's obviously not able to do well. I think therefore that he will do well to stay in the top 5 or so, both in qualifying and the race itself. I think that would be a realistic aim. Don't get me wrong, i'd love to see him destroy the field and add fuel to the "it's the best car" debate as I'm not a Lewis fan however I think it may actually prove that debate by showing that it is the driver who adds that little bit extra and differentiates themselves from the rest.

It's certainly going to be interested to see it unfold, something to look forward to. If I was Bottas, I'd be doing everything possible to ensure I don't get beaten. Not even in practice. I think this is about assessing for the 2022 drive, once contracts expire.

Or maybe Lewis will retire and it's about next year......

For sure, these F1 cars are very much bespoke to the driver. It will be interesting to see how Russell develops through the Friday sessions and into the weekend. I normally watch practice in the background I might pay more attention this Friday

Lewis will not retire until he has beaten Schueys record for championship....and then it's in his blood so think he will go on and on....

I bet Williams got some pennies for letting him drive for Mercedes...

I see that Mick Schumacher has signed for Haas next year. I don’t see any of the noise about privilege that Lance Stroll gets all the time and yet you can’t possibly say that he hasn’t got an advantage with his name and the family fortune.

Stroll may well have got a fast route through his father but he’s proving to be a decent driver and worth his seat.

Perez also got a ride into f1 through a wealthy sponsor but he seems to have shaken that with performances.

I think that I may have changed opinions and Albon will retain his seat and Perez in the wilderness, at least for a season. I think that Max will have been campaigning for himself and wants to be team leader which Perez would threaten. And I think they have backed him so much that they will pander to it. I’d like to see him stay as I think he’s better than he’s showing and could well seriously improve if they can find a way to set up the car that he likes. He seems similar to Vettel in that he’s great in the right set up and average without it.

Just when F1 was looking boring, it’s got interesting again!
