Can't pull the relay out. What a silly position!
It defo wants relocating, is removing the boot liner quite straight forward then?

Calm down everyone. The relay has 4 x 6.35mm blade terminals and one smaller one (if I recall without walking out to the car where I keep my spare in the boot LOL). So it is very well held in its socket. Just get hold of it with a clean hand, and gently work it upwards. Use a grippy glove if you want to. Mine was not held in with any clips, just the friction presented by the socket connectors. Dave

Thought it would be a good idea to buy a spare pump relay. Looked in the battery compartment but cant see where the relay is. There are lots of wires... Above the battery there a 2 black plastic(rectangular) covers marked relays and fuses but I thought it was attached to the bodywork and not immediately visible..? Can't find any diagrams.

Its the grey relay on the top left hand side of the photo, above the battery isolator, attached to the body with some fuses mounted to the left of the relay on the same bracket. Took me around 10 goes to get the right picture!!

Cheers Mike, a picture is worth a hundred words. I have my BMW replacement relay in the glove box.

Thanks for going to the trouble of taking the picture.

That's okay.
The picture makes it look easy to access, but to take the picture the camera was on the boot floor looking up, hence trial and error until I got the right one!

Looking at the picture I can see this now as the battery is below

So did we nail down the up-rated "newer" relay matched to the up-rated "newer" F1 pump or are we talking about the earlier relay for the older pump......please nail it down for us Mike?

I think the matching of the relay to the pump is a red herring.
We have the original relay and the uprated relay. The difference being the uprated relay has better relay contacts for a longer more reliable life.
The same applies to the F1 pump, original and uprated, again the latter uprated pump for a longer more reliable life.
Any combination of relay/pump works, but if you have the uprated relay and uprated pump, you have the best combination for a long and reliable life.
That's how I see it!

So how do you know if you have the uprated F1 pump or the older one. Didn't want to get the wrong relay. Mines a 2005MY if that helps.

I thought one had a rating of 30 somethings....new one 50?

P

Maybe.
The new uprated relay I have has no amp rating stamped on it.
If it is rated at 50 amps, that's one reason why it will have a longer life, improved contacts, better current carrying capacity.
