External Temperature Sensor

Has anyone changed the external temp sensor? Mine has always been wrong but is now messing up the AC.

Does the mirror glass just lever out/unclip and you can get to it from there?

It was a long time ago when I did mine on the GS but I remember removing the door card and unbolting the mirror housing from the inside. If it is possible by simply removing the mirror glass then I wasted an hour or two that day!

Presumably you still have to remove the glass even if the mirror has to come off?

Yes. Then just press the temperature sensor out of the mirror housing and swap the new one in.

I did mine and i remember taking the whole mirror off including removing the door cards and i was following the workshop manual. Its very fiddly inside the mirror and I am pretty sure you cant change it with the mirror on the car.

There is a self tapping screw holding the plastic frame which the glass fixes to in place. It's on the right hand side of the mirror and is accessed with small screw driver pushed down between the glass and the inside edge of the mirror. With this screw removed you should then remove the 2 self tapping screws from the underside of the plastic section of the mirror. With these 3 screws removed you may gain access to be able to remove the glass. If not try undoing the 3 screws from the underside of the cast section of the mirror. These hold the motors and mechanical assembly but beware if these shear off your in the muck. If these are tight it might be best to buy a new glass so you can risk forcing the glass off as it will most likely crack when you do this but the new one will then just clip in place. Ps when l changed mine l removed the mirror from the door and done it on the bench but you need to allow half a day for this.

Thanks both. If it wasn’t for the fact it was cocking up the AC, I wouldn’t be doing it.

Oh for something simple, fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more!

When you say its cocking up the ac what do you mean. Does the temperature read OK on the instrument cluster?

The part numbers are different on Eurospares but more than that I don’t know.

No the temperature either reads about 10c too low or just 0c. Which means it keeps thinking it’s freezing outside and turning the AC compressor off.

Bought a pair of 166 mirrors myself, just in case while cheap and available.

If you’re desperate for any parts let me know

Different bases, so do you use the Maserati one and fit the internals from the Alfa mirror to it?

I would check the connections before replacing the actual sensor. I've had similar temp discrepancies on 2 Alfas and more recently a friends Fiat 5000 and it was just down to the connectors needing cleaning up.
