I don’t really think that does sum up every thread on EVs on this forum. There are many of us (me included) who have been genuinely considering buying one, but trying to understand what the commitment would mean and is now the right time.

Factored into that decision, for a few of us, is the true environmental impact of staying with our ICE cars or adding or replacing with an EV. For others the financial, aesthetic and driving pleasure trade offs.

Clearly the answers to those questions are moving and changing all the time so you’d expect the thread to run and evolve.
Exactly. I'd like an EV (because I'm intrigued by them and my inner geek fancies giving one a try for a bit) but simply don't need one. I could do with a bigger car but to be honest the usage a car gets for us is minimal so it would be an indulgence. I was looking recently at a new work project which would have involved a weekly commute of maybe 240 miles. An EV would have been perfect for that... until we wanted to go further afield one weekend. A stop at a service station on the M4 on the way back from the holy union of Stevie and Skye last weekend showed us 2 charge points (taken) and a facking great big petrol forecourt that I filled up in and was on my way in 5 minutes flat.

For now, I'll wait for the future to catch up with the present but remain a keen observer.

(Time for an AI thread..? )

One of my neighbours has a full EV hatchback; he's retired and it's used by him and his wife for relatively short local runs, frequently with the grandchildren on board. It's a 2022 model, and he told me that he was shocked by its performance in the recent cold snap when the range, which is not good to start with, reduced by around 25%, and if the heater vents were directed to the floor (his wife likes warm tootsies) the heater would eventually shut down to prevent the battery overheating. He likes his foreign holidays but will not be using it for the 70 mile airport run because of range anxiety, so the ice car in his garage will be used for that.

Now here's the rub; he gets a substantial discount on the purchase price (c£30k) of his cars as his son is the sales manager for a large dealership, and the home charger was a freebie. He said there is no way he could possibly afford an EV without that discount and he wouldn't want to either. There are Tesla chargers at a hotel 5 miles away but he says there's little else in the area to top up, so he would be scr3wed without the home charger.

If EV's are the future (and I don't think they are), they need to be more affordable and supported by a comprehensive infrastructure. Anything less is just fluff.

To sum up every EV thread we ever have on this forum:
Those of us that actually have them and use them everyday as company cars like the tax savings
Those that don’t have them, don’t like them.
Both those that do and don’t have them, still like ICE cars as well.
The end.

EFA on line 2 :D

Sometimes it’s a stretch to get to our 22kW workplace charger. Now very popular in this charging desert:

That's me most weeks, trying to get my 8m cable to go just that little further... I swear some drivers do it on purpose, and the worse culprits are other EV owners who just want to enjoy the larger paring space!

Precisely where I am; looked hard into an EV pickup truck. Couldn't pull the trigger, for all the reasons cited herein. And still optimistic enough to think there's a competing technology that will ultimately address these issues. Plus, seems to me that the development of some sort of synthetic/biofuel alternative for ICE cars remains a possibility. There are plenty of jets in the world, and yet still propellers exist.

I found a guy on Tiktok who's made a video how cheap EVs are to run

he's charging it at home, bought a Hyundai KonaEV with cash, retired ,only he's ignoring the fact he's spent 40k on an EV and 32k on a solar setup with lithium batteries still thinks it's cheap to run, deluded , even if there is a saving he'll be long dead by the time it's there

Mrs Z has finally given me an ultimatum, she wants a small car to run around locally one that is modern (preferably new) but wants to keep the RR for long trips and family holidays. She has suggested leasing an EV as she reads they are cheap to run.

Issue 1 - Irish car prices are stupidly high
Issue 2 - Irish lease deals are also stupidly high
Issue 3 - Almost all the dealers are saying the waiting list for a new EV here is 6-12 months

Solution : She's getting the keys to my 06 Alfa 147 and she can like it or lump it.

This will certainly put me in the doghouse, it will certainly mean the removal of all favours and there will be lots of huffing and puffing and door slamming but in summary probably better than having an EV

Maybe a Curpa Born? They look like a good EV option to me, and the real world range of over 300 miles is pretty decent.

I've no idea about costs or waiting lists in Ireland, but if that's tricky and as you are in the EU, presumably you can just go and order one from Spain (or wherever the price is least and waiting list the shortest)?
