European breakdown cover for the older Maserati

Yikes, I just noticed that my car has slipped out of my RAC Comprehensive Breakdown Cover - which I have through my bank account - their small print excludes European cover for vehicles over 11 years.

It looks like I'll have to find some sort of classic cover for European trips.

Any suggestions?

Both the AA and RAC do European cover for vehicles of any age.

Many people don't know that if you breakdown on a peage in France only the peage company's authorised agent is allowed to recover you. Not sure if that's similar on other toll roads such as Italy as I've not broken down there!

Apparently most have agreements in place with people like the AA and you should be covered. But I got stiffed when I had a puncture on the bike a few years ago.

With my car now 15 years old now hopefully at next insurance renewal time I'm hoping I can get it on classic insurance and with breakdown cover they offer, bit of luck it will work out cheaper than my current set up standard insurance and AA cover.

Biggest issue with European breakdown cover is making sure repatriation is covered, a lot don't and it can be expensive. Most of the big companies offer it as an extra so check your small print.

I have a Nationwide bank account and their breakdown cover has no age restriction either at home or abroad. It is through Britannia rescue who were excellent last year when a rear shock failed on my 147. Took us & car to our destination hotel then recovered car and us back home the next day. Also non of that sending out a repair man who says he can't fix that and then have to wait 3 hours for recovery truck. Also includes basic annual travel insurance.

I have repatriation with the AA, the small print is it's only up to the market value of the car. Why can't these companies provide a straight forward service? My car is fubar, now take it home for me please....

FlexPlus - I got that - £10 a month plus loads of other little benefits that mount up and make it worth it, like EU transactions, ATMs etc.

Saved my life when my Maser conked out at rush hour on North Strand in Dublin. Wondered why it sounded really quiet.........

Must check it actually to see if it covers the Retina screen on one of the 15" MacBook Pro's that got busted (Son's fault).

I had my QP on a classic policy for a while. https://www.classiclineinsurance.co.uk/ were quite happy to put it on a classic policy before it was even ten years old.

I didn't see any cost saving; nice people to deal with but I changed back to a normal policy because I didn't like the way classic policies 'park' your No Claims Bonus. After two years parked you are in danger of losing your NCB. As I have full NCB I didn't want to risk this. There were some other restrictions I didn't like, for example when you sell the car mid term, you get no refund for the unused part of the policy. I had no plans to sell the car but I didn't like having my hands tied like that.

I had a classic policy with a company called Highway which are part of LV insurance on my old Alfa 75 Twinspark that I sold before getting my 4200. That policy did generate NCD so I had 9 years stored up when I bought the Maserati. With my clean licence, limited mileage, living in a quiet backwater and taking early retirement meant a premium of under £200:)

My experiences of classic car insurance were with my Triumph Trident T160 motorbike and Triumph Stags I owned. The price was cheap as they were insured on a pleasure and domestic 3k limited mileage. I had one Stag stoved in and wrote off which was not my fault so I claimed off the other driver's insurance although this still involved liaising with my own insurance company who were really good. Although I didn't gain NCD whilst insured this way my daily runabout Ford was doing that for me and still is. I now have about 20 years NCB protected which gives me max discount, clocking up more NCB isn't going to gain me anything now although my daily Ford will still be clocking up NCB (or not if I have a prang and it's my fault).
