El fwd moving seat when tilted forward

Hi guys.

When tilting my passenger seatback forward with the side handle, it also goes forward with the electric motor, but my driver seat does only tilt forward, but does not move forward. Quite unpractical when Enzo the dog is about to enter the car as his place is in the back seat. Is there some kind of extra battery which helps to memorize the position of the seats or what? How does this work. I have the same problem on my E46 bimmer cabrio. It is about time to fix it before it becomes a world problem. Thanks for all inputs.

It should go forward as the passenger seat does.

Unlock the car and within five seconds tilt the seat forward and then toggle the forward and back button back and forth two times then put the back of the seat back to the normal position.

The seat should then go forward and back then to its original starting point.

After that tilt the seat forward and it should go forward.

Wrong way round Peter
Unlock the door
Forwards, backwards, forward, backwards
*Then* tilt the seat forwards

Then it should move forwards and backwards on its own. Then it should work. Briefly

OK! Interesting.

So I unlock th e car, open the door, and within five Seconds, I move the seat (electricly) all the way forward, then all the way backward, and again forward until it stops, and then back until it stops? Then lift the mechanical mechanism and raise the seatback forard, and then the seat should move forward? And when I pull the backrest back into normal position, the seat should go to its last memorized position?

Thanks alot. I have to test this tomorrow!

Not quite.

After opening the door, three quick forward and back (small) nudges with the seat tilted forward, then seat back to upright.

The seat should then move itself all the way forward, then back, and return to set position.

My passenger side sometimes only half heartedly does this recalibration, stopping before full travel. Some WD40 liberally sprayed on the runners fixes this since the passenger seat rarely moves and probably gets clagged

If the seat does not move forward when you tilt the back then its a fault, I.e. faulty fuse, motor ,switch l am sure the other procedures referred to are for resetting the seat position to the position you have set the seat to when it returns from the forward position.

I am pretty sure it will start working after said procedure though! It is a 'seat reset' and is often required for all sorts of reasons.

Get a Stradale. No electric seats to worry about and plenty of space back there for the pup.

I tested the seat again and did the procedure, but no difference... when I tilt the back fwd, then the seat start to move fwd for about half a second, but then immediately moves back for a half second to its first position... I wonder what is wrond. I tale my dog in and out now and I need that function to work properly! Again, thank for input!!!

Might be something in the tracks. Might be the connectors dragging on the carpet. Might be the car objecting to having a dog in the bag. OK that last one isn't likely. Might be the control unit is shot.

Next thing I'd try would be a battery reset, then another seat reet if functionality isn't restored.

If that doesn't work then dealer time (for me)

From the manual:

System initialization
Following any power cut-out (e.g.,
after using the battery master switch
or dead battery), check the seats
to ensure that they are operating
properly when the power supply
is available: perform the following
procedures on both seats in the event
of a malfunction.
With the ignition key in position STOP
(OFF) and the door on the side of the
seat concerned closed, open the door
and begin the following procedure
within 5 seconds, then complete it
within 10 seconds:
1) forward - STOP
2) backward - STOP
3) forward - STOP
4) backward - STOP
5) tilt the seatback fully forward and
wait until the seat performs two
complete travels (forward and
backward).
6) move the seatback to its normal
upright position.

Exactly as mine. The tracks get stiff and the motor thinks it's at end stop. Spray WD40 liberally a d move seat back and forth a few times to loosen up the try

Brilliant! My drivers seat didn't move back, and I thought that it was only the passenger seat that did that. Followed the instructions, and it now works perfectly. Only thing to note, is that when you do the forward/back/forward/back sequence, and tilt the seat back down, let it run through the automated process of going forward and back until you hear a long 'beep' sound. It is then set up.

Thank you very much. I will test after using some WD40.... The seat moves very slowly and sounds like is is working hard.... This car has not been driven much at all so that might be the reason. Will try again.

What is your experience regarding WD40? Will it cause stains in the carpet?
