E46 M3 or Boxster S

They’re probably about as cheap as they’re going to get. They’ll go the way of the £5k M5 or £15k 964 soon.
Boxster? No way. Far too many of them. The 964 is a different matter - classic air-cooled and small numbers as is 993.
Pre-2009 Boxster i would not touch for bore scoring and IMS. Those cars are ridiculously cheap but most are absolute dogs needing a lot of money. The MY2009 cars are good value with an all new DFI engine. Some good clean low/avg mile MY2009-onwards cars out there. Pre DFI loads of dogs.

Just read some Great reviews on these as they have the best bits of the CSL and Andy reckons that was the Best car he has owned and he has had a few.
If my daughter wasn't getting married I could be tempted as they can only go one way.
The SMG option was also over 2 grand and a lot of buyers went for it.
For once though I fancy a manual box must be my age.
The CS is my favourite non-Italian car from a driving point of view (928 GTS manual for everything else). The steering is sublime. They only made 101 manual cars for the UK, so somewhat rarer than the CSL. Around a quarter are dead or on their way there. Manual ones with less then 50k miles are rare and already expensive. But you’re unlikely to lose money on it...

Not driven the 3.2 Boxster but im a big fan of M and I love the quality and value fo money of some models
The e46 M is a great car and moved on a lot from e36 but make sire it’s manual as smg2 was bad
I agree, but with the caveat that I forgive SMG in a CSL, and the robotised manual in a Granturismo MC isn't a lot different.

...but yes, I chose the manual E46 M3.

I owned both 964 Carrera 4 Coupé and 993 Carrera manual Coupé. Both were fantastic. Bought the C4 for £19k from Porsche Centre Kendal, traded it for £15k against a £30k 993, which in turn I traded the 993 for £22k against a MK1 996 GT3 Club Sport (which was £40k)...how times have changed.
But I don't regret having had the different driving experiences, and I drove them as daily driver's, as I do with my GTS MC now, although I now have the good fortune to have 5 cars to choose from.
Btw, whilst I feel that bore scoring is a genuine issue, it wouldn't put me off buying a Boxster, Cayman or 911, subject to boroscope inspection and fitting of a low temp stat. We have a 2006 Cayman S which my wife uses as a daily and it's very sweet indeed.
Take care when buying, it's correct that a lot of cars are not maintained properly, but a well maintained car is a pleasure.

Polar silver is a lovely colour. Doesn't it have an ever so slight blue hint to it in sunlight. Nearly bough a Boxster in this colour many moons ago and remember thinking what a lovely silver it was.

Mate has an E60 M5 with SMG box, he has £30k of invoices since he has had it but fortunately most of them paid for by the warranty company. Most of the costs have been SMG gearbox and drivetrain.

Anyone know about diagnostic equipment for an early Boxster say 1998, will it be OBD2 compatible as it’s prior to the blanket introduction?

I'm not sure how useful generic OBD readers are for Porsche. The Porsche diagnostics are PIWIS and held by main dealers and indys.

Not sure either. I’ve got proper BMW and Volvo software and they’ve earned their money back over the years.

My Dad’s considering an early Boxster and was wondering whether the generic reader I use on the 3200 would be any use taking along to look at one.

Wil pop onto 911uk and have a look around.

Trying to find what I want is not proving an easy task.
I want a nice metallic blue and a beige interior.
Just too many Black and Silver ones out there.
