Starts today I believe. From now on all cameras in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Holland, Austria and Italy can get info from the DVLA so you can receive the fine notice. Non payment after 3 months could result in car being seized at borders if spotted on number plate recognition cameras.

Oh happy days

You can see thanks to lousy admin motorists having their cars seized because they didn't get the speeding notice, and then having to prove they weren't aware.
Like everything else, thanks to technology it's easy for organisations and government to screw the public at any and every opportunity just as a new source of revenue!!
As I mentioned on another point regarding speed camera detector/dash cams even safe drivers are at risk of losing their license with now even bigger fines. What a joke!!

So what if you buy a car that has previously been through this system?

I think carrying proof of ownership and purchase date will become important but the biggest problem as I see it will be the vengeful nature of the French who are already looking for any opportunity to target a GB plate.

Yes I wouldn't try that on. Front number plates missing will also **** them off! :D

If its a realtime connection they have will they pick it up as a false plate? That may result in more trouble than a speeding fine.

It wont be instant access to the database no. It will be the same system as what UK business can do if a car parks in private parking as do the companies that manage Tescos and service stations etc (UK Parking Ltd?)

They can apply in writing for the info that the DVLA will dully oblige in writing. It can take weeks.

I feel the foreign police will end up not bothering in the end and use it a more a deterrent than anything else.

Incidentally, in France, its law to have the vehicle registration document with you. I have been stopped several time and been asked for it where I always reply the same "its not UK law to carry it" and so far they seem to accept that excuse.

I am just going to run Bennyd's plate whilst playing overseas :)

Pretty sure it will be near real time.
The system is supposed to be the same for all countries and a fine in France takes 2 weeks to reach a mailbox in Luxembourg.
Same for a fine from Belgium.

I have first hand experience with both, sadly ....

Member states have been given new powers to track down UK motorists caught breaking the law on the continent.

The new laws will come into force by May 7, after the UK's two-year exemption has expired.

But the Government has hinted it will revoke the powers when Britain officially cuts ties with Brussels.

The last line speaks volumes, looks like we will have to behave ourselves for the next year or so, oh and a fine of £640 being touted.
