Map out the kick down and allow the car to hold a gear until told to change?

Its the old decision of a 4.2 auto vs 4.7 auto but with mostly town driving I feel the 4.7 will be a waste if I can sort the sound and gearbox niggles out on the 4.2.

I say this having not driven either yet as there are few for sale within 50 miles of Bristol!

Around town a 4.2 auto should be fine, they are rather cheap now so buy the very best you can afford.

Sommis car is the nicest sounding QP I have had the pleasure to hear

Happy to demo it when you want .

Honestly the biggest pleasure of Maserati ownership is the aural feedback you get like no other car.
With DS and Mc-shift you get to control and play them like rock guitars. Much more fun than Auto ZFs any day.
