I take the hybrid approach doing generally low annual mileages.
Take it to an independent when it reaches mileage service milestones, but carry out fluid changes etc yourself in between due to time not mileage.

Did 100% of the work required on the 4200 and have had very satisfactory feedback viable new owners from Ftech that it was mechanically perfect, the fact the clutch managed 63,500 miles gives me a real boost. I fully intend to do all the work on the GS myself. I will keep it recorded on a spread sheet with receipts for parts and fluids. Voicey checked the car for me last week on a pre-Spain shakedown and a clutch reset. Very pleased to report all looking fantastic. No fear diving into any of the mechanics.

What a horrific article. As if someone would go and buy a Lambo (from Gallardo era onwards) and service it at home.

Just nuts and bolts Phil. Only job I would think twice about is the clutch but if I had a 4200 I would give it s go.

I do have the bonus of a lift at home so that makes most jobs doable.

Not disputing that, I've serviced them before what I mean is that on a Lambo if you wanted to maintain the maximum resale value you take it to a specialist or an MD. If you have an old Maser that you want to keep for ever then you service it yourself. I certainly wouldn't but a Gallardo, GTS, Strad, Murcielago, F430 from someone who had self service and had no stamps in the service book.

Talk about making your car almost unsaleable!!!! They are hard enough anyway!

I think the point in the article is owners actually enjoy working on them.

It is not all about saving money on service cost or losing resale time.

I seem to remember reading the best way to home fit a clutch was to have the parameters read on a SD2/3 , fit it then take it back on a trailer to get it set up, but you'd need somebody prepared to do that.

If you can do a 4200 you can do a MC Stradale Matt.

Haven't been on the forum in ages and just popped in. I have been doing work on all my cars for ages, absolutely love it. If you keep your car long enough, it definitely pays off and offsets any loss in resale value IMO.

Matt, Congrats on the Strad mate. That's awesome! How long you had it now? Any pics on the forum?

Not when you own a Coupe GT :)
That said, I don't have a lift, so my clutch will be done by a (non specialist) indy garage that I trust.

Unsaleable is one thing, but there will be an offset with the value.
To me, there are 2 points here. The first, the owners enjoy doing it.
The second, the car will inevitable be worth less, but then the owner has spent less money on it.
The saving is obviously in terms of hourly labour, the parts used can obviously be the same, and a folder of receipts, photos etc. can be valuable.
There will always be someone out there willing to buy a cheaper car, and there will also be forums like this, and no doubt, people like you, that would recommend a fellow members are with no stamps but in the knowledge that it wanted for nothing.

I can all but guarantee my 4200 will never see the inside of a main dealer under my ownership, and I also doubt it'll be any worse for it, though I appreciate there is a world of difference between a 4200 and a F430, Gallardo, GTS etc. - even if the largest part of that difference is in resale value!

Hey Ross, I was at the season opener. Great game to watch. Shame about the result though!

I think the game at Leicester is mid March. Let's see how the season pans out. If it's all to play for by that stage I'll see if I can set something up!

Sounds good mate. I doubt either team will have anything to play for beyond some sort of pride...that'll have to be good enough! Let's do it
