That might be what you are hearing, but it's not really what I am saying.

I don't think that asking not to be discriminated against because of the colour of your skin (or because you are female, or disabled, or anything else that you cannot change by 'getting off your backside and doing something about it') is 'asking for favours', it is asking to be treated like everyone else. But being treated like everyone else is NOT 'hey, sink or swim exactly like I did', because these extra disadvantages are real things that create real disadvantage.

As FC said, you can both be for rewarding personal achievement, AND be for trying to reduce racial prejudice. Neither diminishes the other if done right.

Basically what you are saying is because you are white you should be someone who should "do good" and that
"I try to recognise that I did not get where I am (just) through my own wonderful talents, and that other people might need a bit of a helping hand. Frankly, I do the absolute minimum of that helping, but at least I try a little bit."

Well, as an example, I wasn't born into a wealthy family, and I got to where I am through my own hard work.
At one point almost 9 years ago, I was almost bankrupt, almost homeless, and suicidal.

Did I sit on my backside feeling sorry for myself (yes for a bit) and then blame others for my predicament (yes, for a bit, as they were valid) but then I decided I didn't want to top myself, and that if I wanted something out of this life that was dealing me a shite hand I had to get off my backside and do something about it.

9 years later I've never been so happy. I have a gorgeous wife and son, I earn a decent living and we're having a lovely family home built for us.

No one gave me a helping hand, no one gave me a pot of cash to get started, everything I have done since then has been down to my own hard work.
And it's not because of the colour of my skin, as most of what I do starts with phone calls and emails. So colour is irrelevant.

The lesson I learnt over this time is that you get out of life what you put in. Life is tough, so if you're not prepared to work for something don't expect any favours.

I wonder how many “self made” men and women there are on this forum verses those that inherited most of what they have. I would bet most on here did it themselves...........

I am 'self made' having received bu99er all from my parents - and proud of the fact too.
I did not knowingly hurt or upset anyone, I studied and grafted and also had a bit of luck along the way
I have achieved a comfortable lifestyle (not mega rich) own my home and a modest holiday home, can go on holidays and drive a Maser
I don't think that is a bad fist of things and I recommend that route to my children and others

just catching up on reading this thread, and some diverse views being expressed.

I think it is very hard, and maybe impossible, for anyone who is white to claim to understand what it feels like to be racially discriminated... from talking to and listening to some black colleagues at work, I think lots of us probably over assume that the problem has gone away in the UK, but their lived experience is the opposite...

It’s depressing to have to admit it but the reality seems to be that in many ways Britain is still systemically racist, and that there is a world of difference between how people are treated just due to the colour of their skin...

Greenham Common closed years ago, the runway dug up and used for the A34. Only the tower survives and it been returned as common land.
