Good day. To be brief, 07 qp zf. I started to notice a rattle when decelerating. This occurs after warm up. As I was going to replace the valve covers, I also checked for slack timing chain (as far as one could check), and removed the top tensioner which seems fine...as far as I can tell. There's lots of resistance, although I did not have a new one for comparison. Oil is clean and level. Front belts all new. This is definitely an engine sound, left bank (north American lhd) sound. Any thoughts?

Listened to it with a stethoscope and definitely a front side noise. Also, it isn't apparent stone cold, but after warm up and only decelerating, as if there is chain slap. It could still be a tensioner i think.

Does sound like chain tensioner. If so would need urgent attention. If it jumps a tooth damage can be serious.

On some of the Maserati cars the exhaust manifolds are double skinned and have then been known to 'part' and rattle inside each other especially when hot.

I see. The rattle sounds like it us coming from the front corner, near the variator and chain assembly, rather than from the manifold, but good to know.
