Data Breach

I've come home from work to find that a company handling my previous company's pension scheme has had a data breach via a successful phishing scam.
The pension handler has offered me 12months free credit report monitoring, which I feel is a cop out.

I smell bull and feel that they are covering up a serious breach. Do you think that I should contact a lawyer? I'm going to speak to my old company's pension trustees to see what they are doing about this tomorrow but has anyone had similar. Obviously I feel its also an opportunity to get compensation but what do you think?

Get used to it boys as there is going to be a lot more of this for the next few years.

I'm not a betting man as am not a naturally lucky person and useless at gambling which is why I don't do it. However I'd bet my mortgage there will be shocking number of hacks (publicised or otherwise!) and data breaches over the next few years.

It may be me, but I fail to see why this is such a great issue, if someone gets my data. So what? Are they going to live as me? they are welcome to that lol. And why would I need compensation if nothing has been done with it?

I was a 'victim' of the BA data loss and they offered me the 12 month report monitoring ..... didn't stop some cnut blitzing the credit card though!

Ultimately I decided not to pursue (although reserve the right to give the case to some ambulance chasing scum in the future!) for the following reasons;

  • even if they were negligent / had poor controls, I suffered no actual loss
  • I am old school and believe that **** happens and that there is no need to always blame someone
  • I can't be arsed

In some cases nothing may be useful or used or cause a problem. However some data can be very useful or dangerous to get into the wrong hands. Especially if it is used with other data to build a very strong electronic identity or similar.

With the Data that they have, they could take out loans and credit cards etc. Rack up a fortune, default and guess where the baliff will come...

But surely most if not all is freely available anyway, with a bit of research? It's maybe just easier to get it all in one place.

yup, happened to me a few years ago, someone successfully applied on line for a credit card, luckily Lloyds fraud team got wind of it and stopped card going out, paranoid these days and we burn all relevant paperwork now once a month, there were reports a few years ago of crooks going through peoples bin bags for personal info that could be used for ID fraud

Isn't that what Facebook is for..?

Seriously, the amount of data that still pings across to Facebook, even if you de-install the app, turn off cookies and all that shite, is astonishing. Yeah, I know it's not your credit card details. We have online supermarkets for that. They know more about us than we do.

I love the smell of diesel-soaked pine. Reminds me of truck-stop toilets.

****, that was tough work and the pay wasn't great. Anyway, we digress.

the money don't matter as long as you had some job satisfaction and remember sh1t happens especially with truck driver loads
