Not an auto, but I’ve got a nice 2011 guilietta QV in black I’m about to advertise. Less than 6k. It’s really quite nippy with 235bhp and does about 35mpg on a roads/motorways.

I am selling my father's 330d for him if you want to use the devils fuel (much nicer than a 320d and still 40+mpg). £4k

There's a lot of pressure on Mercedes to make a decent E-Class, primarily from German Taxi Drivers. Many have done astronomical mileages (kilometreages?)

Can't go wrong with a Jag XF or an E Class.

I've had both, for a 7k budget you get more Jag for you money.

That's the route I went. Comparing the two at 15k, you get a better car if you buy the Merc.

Just given my 9 year old XF 3.0 D with a 150,000 miles a 3 car was and a good waxing with my 10 year old tin of Harleys bought off my old mate Dem at the Ace out of the boot of Urbys GS.
Still got one un opened tin to see me out.
She did over a 1,000 miles last week and still looks amazing to me.
Can't fault her.

If you are looking at Golf Gtd, I would suggest looking at a Seat Leon 2.0 tdi 184. Same engine/underpinnings as the golf but likely to be cheaper/better spec. A bit less tartan though! I have the 150bhp one and it has been great. Doing 30k-ish per year and needed nothing other than tyres and replacement pads.

Not really in the same class as the Jag Xf, but maybe another option to look at.
