So, Denmark is over, start a new job 1st October after a couple of weeks hooning around Italy.
Commute is circa 70 miles round trip, want cruise, auto and decent mpg.Budget probably up yo £7k, no loans.
At the moment thinking
Jag XF
Golf GTD
Any other bright ideas from the collective.

There are some things afoot that may make my requirement of a motorway mile muncher deprecated.

An XF has to be a good shout.

They are better than that. Frankly I think they're brilliant. I very much feel about mine like I felt about the 166. Does what it's meant to brilliantly. Problem is it's not what I want from a car :(

Stupidly comfy
Quiet
Suitably fast
Cheap
Parts are hilarious compared to Maser parts
and >40 mpg on a run

I have a 2007, 2 owner, 34K miles BMW E60 523i SE Auto. Presents and drives like a new car and does 500 miles to a tank. Want a little bit more than your budget though and it is petrol though all the better for it in my opinion.

But they are the devil's fuel

I'm averaging 22mpg which is not bad and the best I've had out of any large high performance motor these days. Would pay twice as much for twice the pleasure for the mileage I do. Luckily I don't do many miles these days.

Do diesel Jaaaaaaags come with the pipe, slippers, and velvet smoking jacket as standard?

Yes. They have a special storage pocket in the (touch controlled) glovebox.

Now there's a problem looking for a solution :)
