There are several sub-£20k Gransports on eBay at the moment. Some really nice looking ones too!

I remember when I was last looking at them (got the Aston instead) in 2013 the technical cloth models were mostly around £18k. Seems like they’re heading back there quickly.

Some of the results of this auction show some interesting prices:

Some seem stratospheric to me. A few lower and some unsold. A real mixed bag.
I’m thinking of selling my late 2006 4200CC. 33k miles. Excellent condition mechanically and bodywork. Maintained by McGrath’s since I bought it in 2012. What’s it worth?

My 4200 is a 2007 car with 15k miles and absolutely mint. In the current climate I wouldn't expect to get more than £25k but I'm never selling anyway so I guess it is an irrelevance. I would expect my car to be £30k retail on a forecourt in a better more fluid market

A bit different but to compare I'm selling a very nice 2005/55 facelift 4200 with 59k miles at a forum only price of £12.5k at the moment.

Keep it! What are you going to replace it for at that money?

Maybe £20k?

That’s true of many cars! Porsche 968 is an excellent car sub £10k. Not sure about nearer £20k! 944S2 would be my pick of almost any car at £5k. But not at >£10k for a decent one.

The market for low end Classics has I think been hit by the frenzied high end market, forgetting that the high end cars are probably being used for money laundering!
You’ll not get a worthwhile 968 for £10k nor 944S2 for £5k. For a properly good 968 you’ll need £20k, and for an S2, £15k or more.

There’s a lovely red S2 for sale at Steve Bull Specialist Cars at £17k.

The advert says it was serviced in May 2019... so shouldn’t need a service for another 12.5k or 21months. Am I missing somethg?

You are quite correct and didn't see that staring me in the face! I just looked at the service book pic and saw the last stamp. Probably the same as Phil did.

Service from main dealer (£1.7k) in may - and a 10k invoice in 2017... not sure what that was for !

I would say with history like that it makes it a sound purchase.
I managed to convinced the wife to let me buy a second Ferrari if I found the right 550 at a ridiculous price.
If I now tell her I only want to spend 1/2 the money on a GTS she might ask me to jump on it lol

So hypothetical question. The guy @ Greenside Cars sent me this over as I said I was possibly looking at 612's which got me thinking.

Now this is a guy that has a small office, works on his own, doesn't prep his cars or do anything with them much if at all. Just buys them in and ships them out. Doesn't know much about cars, is not a car guy and just sees them as boxes to buy and sell to people he isn't so bothered about. After sales and warranty? No idea.

My thoughts. Would you spend £100k on this 599 or any cars of this value or more with a dealer like this?

Let alone the fact that it might not come w warranty nor be prepared for sale, I am not sure I would spend £100k on a 599 w 30k miles per-brexit. The downside potential is likely to be 20-30k or more if the economy goes tits up.

I would think that buying a pristine 550 for around £85-90k w the same mileage is likely to be a safer investment depreciation wise and fare better in 10 years than a 599. Without mentioning the lower cost of ownership.

Obviously the performance would be much less, even if it’s not all about performance.

Well yes, that’s exactly my point. At £10k and £5k respectively they’re excellent cars, but nothing about them justifies >£20k and >£10k valuations in my view. They’re middle of the road old Porsches that sold by the million. Current pricing makes them incredibly poor value.

I've got to call this out, although the 944 series was a great sales success for Porsche, they were not sold by the million. There were around 163,000 sold worldwide over all variants spanning a long production run (without checking, about 10 years).

They're also very good and groundbreaking cars of their era; especially when you consider the 944 Turbo (220 & 250) and the 968 Club Sport - contemporary reviews by highly regarded road testers verify this.

These are the figures for remaining cars in the UK:

An S2, Turbo or 968 manual in good condition, reasonable mileage and good provenance is not bad value at all. Indeed, they've arguably been undervalued for a long time.

Fair; I didn't realise so few sold.
