I don’t disagree with you Phil, Jaguar does have a pedigree, I just think Maserati is more rooted in the history of motor sport from inception and has this special aura that Jag has lost over the past 20years producing average at best saloon car for the masses.
Don’t get me wrong they still produced cars I would love to own (pre-70s mainly).
Also - although I respect Enzo tremendously, I politely disagree w his statement... I would put a lot of cars ahead of the etype design; the 300SL Gullwing for starter :)

As Rockits mentioned I should try a few modern ones and let myself be influenced by how good their actual owners claim they are.
Crikey if Enzo thought the E-type was beautiful (which it was, especially stunning as a drop top) imagine what he thought of Lamborghini’s sublime Miura...(ooofff and in SV guise, Jesus it was out of this world) I bet he grabbed and told his people why the ****aren’t we building this!!:D

I am so confused about the car market now... some POS selling at Silverstone for top dollars and my neighbor’s is struggling to sell his 612 for £50k w perfect history and huge bills to sort big things over the past 4 years he’s owned it.

That 2011 30k miles w FMSH MC shift seems like crazy value for age and mileage - and 3 year warranty outstanding

And it’s been there for weeks...

I don’t get it. I am seriously considering adding another car to the stable. And if Brexit is a **** show, there’s only one way for the prices to head to post Oct 31st.
That 612 looks great. I'd consider a PX against that, but don't expect they'd be interested in my eclectic offer, which are all top notch.

I do agree on the MC. Just feel they can still drop south and depreciate further and are not sometimes too cheap to run.

Drive an XJ SuperSport of XJR....you might be surprised. Mine has sports rear boxes so has a nasty Jag side to it with some bite. It is probably the quickest car I have as is just so usable. You stab your foot down and it just takes off and doesn't stop. At Llandow last time I was with Hoyin in his Noble and the white XJR was pulling away from us on the straights and barely any slower round the bends.

It feels just as special to sit in and drive as you don't see many around. It has tons of room in the back of the LWB.

Nice but won’t ever be a classic imo. Just too Americanized to wear the classic Jag badge. The GTS MC Shift on the other hand if bought right and low miles could well be a modern classic just like you anticipate your low mile 4200 to be one day. The GT is a much more sorted car than the 4200 in terms of build quality and reliability.

Agreed mate....not looking to keep the XJL forever. Just to enjoy it for a few years. Cheap car that won't lose money.

I didn't want money in a QP or GT as fancied they were going to have a hard time for a while. Looking as going that way too.

I don't think any modern Maser's will be classics including my 4200 for many years yet. Got a long while to wait yet.

3200 first but even before that the Zagato Spyder and some Ghibli / biturbo era stuff may pop like the shamal has? Weird market... it’s the stuff that is not emotive which sells and appreciates which is weird. Look at Z3M coupe prices, you could not gives these away ten years ago! Look at some of the older 911’s pre 993 air cooled they peaked but have thankfully dropped back. Prices of 355’s have dropped back recently too plus 360’manual is a good place to be with a low miler manual at £50k now.

Z3M Coupe is a truly exceptional car though. BMW reliability with skunkworks story adding to the sexiness, rarity, an epic drive (shorter wheelbase than a 911 so you could slide it with ease), first engine (S50) to make 100bhp/litre naturally aspirated, no drivers aids (again, S50). It's an absolute winner and I regret selling mine to this day.

Believe it or not that isn't that cheap. Early R230 SL500 are plentiful and very cheap. You can pick one up for £5k.

Just sold my R129 SL500 which would be a better buy.

Many early R230 SL500 need plenty of money spent on them as that old problem of getting cheap to buy but not cheaper to run. any of them have been neglected for last owner or two or three. Roof can be expensive and go wrong. Suspension the same although engines and boxes are strong. Better cars are the later 388bhp cars, a bit newer, a few k more but possibly in better shape as more cared for.

I had an SL55 for a month maybe 5 years back. Bought it for 10k....needed 8-10k spent on it....flipped it out to a dealer for a small profit.

He does have an eclectic mix of cars there for sure!

I knew you would have some knowledge on these mate.
In your neck of the woods I think too.
I shouldn't be looking but its good entertainment.

Agreed they are good but not as good as the prices they are commanding right now imo.

Certainly enjoyed the Z3 M Roadster I had until it ripped the boot floor out twice.
First time under warranty but they wouldn't the second time.
Many Good road trips in her though.
Looked Stunning in Estoril blue.

It is about 20-25 mins from me so pretty close.

The R230 SL500 is cracking VFM at the mo. Do I want one? Not at the moment. Don't really see the point of a convertible in the UK and personally not a fan of convertibles full stop.

I go through phases when I'm happy with contents of garage and times when I feel not so happy and changes are needed. Like you I spend an awful lot of time browsing and hatching plans. Have to be shrewd with my cash and don't have enough to really go to town.

Happy with the 4200, the XJL, the work van, the wife's car and the 306. None of these are going anytime soon.

The TVR needs a change which might be happening soon.

I can see the Alfa GT being swapped for a Mini Cooper S maybe JCW.

That will do me for now

That’s true of many cars! Porsche 968 is an excellent car sub £10k. Not sure about nearer £20k! 944S2 would be my pick of almost any car at £5k. But not at >£10k for a decent one.

The market for low end Classics has I think been hit by the frenzied high end market, forgetting that the high end cars are probably being used for money laundering!

Funny you should say that, went to look at an Estoril Blue S50 yesterday, had my first drive of one. I really quite fancy one now to replace my TVR; it felt like a lot of fun but usable and solid too and I just love the looks, esp in Estoril blue. The prices seem to have softened a bit of late, a 70-90k mile one is good usuable condition is tempting!

What sort of price is that if you don’t mind my asking? S50 is my pick for the lack of traction control and the proper cable throttle.

Careful to check the boot floor (you’ll need to strip all the carpet out but a genuine seller will know this and not be bothered) and get right underneath to check the diff bracket as that can also crack.

The only other issue is the vanos - there are loads of threads on how to listen to ensure it’s still good.

Neither of these problems is world ending, but you’d want a few £k in hand to rectify if either looks bad.

25K advertised, 23K on offer, but thats with some scratches, old tyres etc etc

Yes I've heard about the boot floor, not as easy to check as would like, was hoping to just lift carpet but there is lots stuffed in there, and would ideally look at one a ramp.

There was a high miler on for 14.5 k recently, 178k miles :)

Crikey, that is scary mileage!

Lots of issues are made of the boot floor, but as long as you keep an eye on it and catch it early, it’s fine and not expensive to fix. Better still, do what I did - get a race engineering firm to shore up the spot welds through the addition of solid rivets along the weld lines. I had this done before it showed any signs of failing.
