Coupe prices - what's happening?

It started out at £5,000 and got bid to £6,600 - provisional sale
The trouble is with a 20+ year old Maserati is that (wrongly) they’ve got a bad reputation with reliability and (rightly) got a reputation for expensive parts and servicing. Add to it there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of 4200’s in any guise coming onto the market (even though they’re a rare sight on the roads). The market is a lot more depressed than it was 5 or 6 years ago too. Prospective buyers will assume any old Maserati coming to auction will need money spent on it, lots of it and you end up with the poor results we now see.
Obviously there may be a reason why someone has put a car in a auction (like a deceased estate) but if that’s not the case a private sale is a better option than an auction so you can prove to the prospective buyer they will not be shelling out loads of money for the foreseeable future.

I traded my 4200 for a decent price when I bought the QP VI seven years ago and it was SORN'd almost immediately and not taxed since then, although it had a couple of MOT tests in successive years. It was a nice car, and I like to think it's cosseted in collection somewhere rather than emerging one day as a 'barn find'. Like so many Maseratis over the years they really are very underrated cars, and it's a shame that uneducated pub-talk gives them such a bad rep.
