Considering a Ghibli diesel (2015). Any thoughts ?

Hello All,

I went to view a 2015 white Ghibli and am quite tempted. The condition of the car was excellent, with a full service history at Maser dealers and the most recent service at a Maser indy (full service and new front disks). The car has black leather, the bodywork and paintwork are in very good condition, and apart from a few signs of wear and tear internally, I couldn't fault the condition. I think it is a 2 owner car but will confirm this tomorrow. White was not originally my preferred colour, but the car looked quite stunning. I think I'd probably only take blue over the white.

I usually buy used and lean heavily towards condition and service history over a big spec. This has served me well but it limits my choice as I invariably compromise on colour and spec. This one lacks heated seats, memory seats, and as far as I can tell, any of the packs (business, comfort). It sits on 20" wheels which I find a bit crashy. I presume I can swap these out for 19s or maybe 18s ? It won't look as good on 18s, so maybe it will be 19s.

Here's a link to the car:

There are obviously others out there but there are a lot of 3/4 owner cars, some are a fair distance from Manchester, and my budget is around £20K. Are there any must haves in terms of spec ? Will the lack of spec and the colour harm resale value in say 3-4 years ? I enquired about this one:

but it turns out to be a 4 owner car and they have not responded to my questions about service history and spec. I might pop up there to vie wit but only if they canbe bothered to respond first.

Any tips or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

On the white one, if it has just had its brakes done, on the test drive check there are no vibrations under braking. I had an issue with my previous one on new pads and discs. The discs appeared to warp almost instantly after fitting. The second set did the same, so just make sure braking is all smooth.

If any car you look at has the xenon lights check the headlight washers work properly, they are an expensive fix

Apart from that I can't think of anything that is a common problem on them. My previous 2014 diesel had 110k miles on it when I sold it, and apart from the brake issue and the headlight washers gave me no probs

Welcome.

White with black is a little bland, but others love it.

Few diesel cars will hold up well in the years to come... although petrol ones buck this trend and do not cost much more in the long run.

Having had a couple of Ghibli diesels I would advise going for the highest spec you can find for your budget. My first was very low spec (2016 in black with black leather) and I only kept it for a few months before moving to a very high spec 2015 in blu emozione with a tan interior. The 20" wheels look much better on the car in my view than anything smaller.

The only issue I had was the headlamp washer system failing which, as stated already, is not a cheap fix and a known problem.

Good luck with your search.

I think as time goes on the exact opposite will be true. Given the now equal and increasing vilification of both diesel and petrol, there is a significant risk of ever increasing taxation penalties in using any ICE vehicle, as a result the enormous fuel economy and as it's stands RFL benefits over the petrol engine model, will see diesel gain popularity.
In terms of looking for a used model I would definitely look for a Euro 6 compliant engine, these are identified by the 'ad blue' display level found within the menus of the instrument display panel.
Finally having owned my Ghibli Diesel for now just over six years, I can thoroughly recommend it!

Good point re brakes. I had exactly the same issue on my last Gibber

Thanks all for your comments to date. Much appreciated and I have some food for thought. I am still wrestling with the lack of spec. I called about two other Ghiblis but the service history was patchy. I am never convinced when the selling garage promises to do a service before the sale to bring the history upto date.

If you're going for a diesel make sure it's euro 6 if you're keeping it for any length of time , I can see the restrictions extending on diesels over the next few years

Have you thought about a QP instead.... a bit longer but at that age and price they tend to be better specc'd. This one has the carbon interior, and looks like it also has adaptive dampers..

These are good VFM but definitely too big for me, and also IMO not as elegant as the previous gen. The Ghibli itself feels/is wide and I can think of quite a few roads where I'd have to take more care. Plus the wife insists that any new car must fit on the drive !

The way things are going I'd go for a petrol , unless you're doing mega miles the difference in fuel costs won't be much and if the diesels get hammered with restrictions and extra charges a bit of extra fuel will be the least of your worries, the depreciation could be astronomical

Any commercial vehicle not euro 6 is going to need to be shipped out of the area to sell it after may 2023 because it's £10 a day to drive it anywhere in greater manchester after that
