Classic electric

was just reading with interest the spring motoring classic mag which has a feature on classic electric conversions and although I don't like modern day electric motors I'm quite attracted to a classic conversion, there's 5 uk companies now that can and have converted classic motors for owners and some provide kits for owners to do the conversion, everything from Ferrari 308, merc sl, beetles, porshes 911's, beemers, mg's, 2 cv's, fiat 500, range rovers, 1960's mustangs. Also read that by 2020 the e type zero will be available and aston martin seem to be getting in on the act as well with a db6 mk2 volante conversion

Did Wheeler Dealers have an electric biturbo?

yup, remember watching that one in ed china days, but based in usa. How much nicer would it be swanning around in an interesting classic conversion than these modern electric motors especially in cities with all the congestion charges these days

Certainly much more stylish. Here's a short clip-ette as a taster for those who didn't see it:

What a lovely lady. The full episode is on Dailymotion.

I am not sure a converted car would avoid the congestion charges etc, but that aside, a little electric classic holds some appeal to me.

I’m not sure sure, half the charm/involvement of classics is the power train.

I find old Land Rovers fun to drive because of the lack of power and crash box, replacing that with an electric motor removes the fun.

i'm not an expert on all this congestion charge thing, but surely if they are electric and not polluting then they should be exempt regardless, I think V5c's get amended to show lpg conversions, wonder if the same happens for electric conversions?

I'd love to do a 1961 Cadillac Coupe, trouble is there's a lot more work than just replacing the entire drive train!

I assume it's all to do with ANPR cameras, but if DVLA allowed conversions to be noted on the V5c then presumably TFL would have to recognise conversions?

I don't think they entertain any conversions; I know the whole thing about LPG and the congestion charge was it HAD to be factory or you paid the charge the ULEZ is not going to be any different.

I cannot get Maserati to talk to me as the GS is built to Euro 4 but not on the database as such so I have to pay the ULEZ charge if I take it into town! If I can get Maserati to confirm it is Euro 4 I may be able to persuade them otherwise but even then it would be a temporary respite as it is a rolling programme as is the boundary, it will soon be north/south circular then M25 and as it is 24/7 that is £3.5k a year thank you!

My old Caddy CTS 3.6 had retro fitted LPG and I got the £10 reduction on Road Tax, dunno how that applies to congestion charge...
