Well yesterday I decided to sell my classic Mustang and get myself a classic Alfa Spider.
So having listed the 65 Coupe on eBay last night I took a non refundable deposit at lunchtime today and the car gets collected tomorrow - very happy and have not had to deal with any time wasters.
I am flexible on what Alfa I get, most important would be very good condition and reliable.
In an idea world itwould be a 67 boat tail, but they are like hens teeth.

So before I hit eBay, if anyone has something or knows of a car that might fit the bill, please get in touch.

A 67 boat tail is lovely but pricey and rare. The series 2 are more numerous, better to drive and half the coat. Just my 2 penneth. Good luck.

I should put this in the rant thread really, the buyer for my Mustang who was due to pick the car up tomorrow called and pulled out this evening.
Lots of excuses about illness etc……. then asked for his £500 deposit back.

I have already resold the car for the same price and taken a further deposit ( as often said on here, a quality car priced well, will always sell).

So do I give the guy his deposit back ?

It’s nice to be kind. So if you’ve already resold the car at the same price, you’ll not be out of pocket by returning his deposit. But if it was not refundable, you’d be within your rights to keep it. Maybe keep it, but donate it to charity.

Once the car is off my drive and I have the money and assuming in the bank, my intention is to do exactly that.

A cancer charity and I will message the buyer with copy of the donation.

I think I would be influenced by their story.

If it is "I couldn't be arrsed to come and get the car after all" then its a keep situation.
If it is "I thought my Missus had said yes, but now she says no" then maybe it is a refund.

If you've sold the car what difference does refunding his deposit make ? Spread a bit of cheer in the world and get some karma points.

It depends if you believe him or not, if it is genuine illness then not getting the deposit back is an extra kick in the teeth. He must have been fairly committed to part with five hundred notes. But non refundable is there for a reason and one shouldn't play big boys games without knowing the rules.

i was thinking maybe offer him half back, but on second thought that is probably the worst of options as he will still be unhappy and you may still have a pang of guilt over £250 which is also not worth it. Giving it back is probably in the long run the best option, but it depends on how you feel obviously. Go with your gut.

Reality is I don’t actually believe him, I think he is taking the pi$$. He effectively stepped in to secure the car asking me not to show it to anyone, I cancelled two viewings, then pulled out leaving me high and dry.

I am more likely to discount the car to the current purchaser (but then again he has paid a deposit but is now messing about on full payment and collection) than I am to give the guy his money back.

The guy has accepted he won’t get his money back and remains full of apologies for messing me around.

Anyway, once I am fully paid and the car has gone off the drive I think I will donate it to a charity. In the meantime I will keep my options open, as I don’t want to be out of pocket.
