seems hard to win here: battery self discharges, but at the same time, don't leave a CTEK on it too long or it will fry!. Alchemy!

No one said it was easy! But seriously, it’s not that tricky. Don’t always leave it on charge and don’t let it go flat.

If this the same if you use the battery refresh mode or the winter trickle

Battery refresh will be a charge mode, so won’t be an issue. Float voltage is about 2.25v per cell (13.5v). A Ctek goes for 13.6v for float I understand, but if the temperature is high (as 25 deg +) this should be reduced. They don’t do temperature compensation. This is where the harm Is done.

My ctek (mxs10 I think) has an external temperature sensor plugged in. Do you think this will stop this problem or just a gimmick?

It's funny, this is the first car I've ever had to have a 'smart' charger on due to the drain if left for 3-4 weeks. The car is used daily for 3 weeks, then stored and left on thr ctek fir 3 weeks.
It's never gone flat, even before the ctek, but could really hear how slow it was to turn over after being left. Just thought it was a sensible option.

I leave the FF on the charger that comes with it all the time, if I let the charge drop it goes wild with errors. So far, it’s not been an issue. Also, i never know when I’ll find a window to take it out so it needs to be ready at all times!

I’m pretty sure the Ferrari charge is just a Ctek with a wee horse on it. The car has a special plug to put in straight in as there are obviously many F cars that see low mileages. The more recent ones actually have a magnetic plug under the number so you can charge it without even having to plug in into the boot etc.

The issue with a low battery is on cold restart, the gearbox and attached devises cycle and are last to complete. If the battery volts drop during this cycle the TCU cant complete its start procedure and hence the warnings.

Just checked mine and voltage is 12.48v on a 88A 680a battery - this is after a long drive this morning but being left since 10am. Everything I have read suggests anything below 12.6v means it might be faulty, any feedback welcomed! I think for the £80 it's probably worth trying a new one.

I would be more concerned as to what it drops too first just the ignition on powering everything up and then when you crank the starter.

12.48v cold, then drops to 12.1 on ignition switch then down as low as 10.5 on startup before climbing up to 14.2v when running

Thanks, think I am clutching at straws for a simple solution - specialist coming Monday so let's see where that takes us.

I haven't received my new battery yet, but I'm also fearful that I'm looking for a simple solution to a complex issue! Keep us posted on what the specialist concludes. I'll keep the thread posted on mine.

I have bought a battery capacity tester. Very cheap, works well, for nerds only. Just getting the hang of it:

I'd look around and buy a 200W one probably if I were to buy again.

The biggest problem I see (or have not managed to configure yet) is a lack of low voltage disconect. There is only a programable audible alarm. But, everything else works really really well. Can also test a huge variaty of chargable batteries Li-on etc, and also power supplies etc.

That looks quite cool (and nerdy). I do have a feeling my issue is going to be more directly transmission related, rather than battery related. Albeit I hope I'm wrong.

Shall do and didn't mean to steal any of the thread...problem shared and all that!

It first happened after 120 miles or so after I tried a reset but then pretty much the next time I turned it on so feels like a specific issue.

Absolutely! I think the thread has turned into a great one, your input is really helpful. That's what makes a great forum.

What reset process did you try?

Only disconnecting the battery for 30 mins+ which clears the errors, not aware if there is another procedure?

That's the only one I know of too, just wanted to check there wasn't something I was missing!
