Hi all
Got my two tubs of Helix Ultra 5/40w, got my PureMaserati oil filter, got a new copper washer, mate has a lift.Been looking at youtube video looks quite straighforward.
Any tips especially on refilling?
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Mr Capes of thus parish recommends that the oil filter is tightened up to the correct torque setting.
Likewise his Lordship the right dishonourable Hodroyd of Yorkshire recommends using the copper washer on the oil tank plug when refitting.
Do these two things and you are better than recent experiences that I've seen in the last year.

Whilst you are there, take a good look at the oil pipe that runs to the engine from the oil tank, check for the all too common dissimilar metal corrosion of the aluminium connector. I have a solution in the making of this.

Warm it up, up on the lift, once it is heat soaked to a workable (as in not going to scald you) temp, drain the tank (may need to remove the under tray to access this but most have had a concenient hole drilled in the tray), second pan and drain the sump, thieves pan and remove the filter, you can pick up a 3/8” drive on fleabay for this or wrangle it with any other improvised tool. Reverse, put the filter on and torque it correctly (cannot remember of the top of my head but I think 7kn), both plugs back in and fill 6lt oil, crank but not start a few times till you show pressure, start briefly, off dip the tank for a rough check, add to low level, run and check level on warm idle to top mark.

Well that’s how I do it anyway...

Whilst you are there check the large nut on the return pipe on the bottom of the tank for condition, they have been known to split with varying consequences.

Thanks for the advice so far.
Excuse my ignorance but how do you make sure the oil filter has the right torque? Also how do you crank the motor over without it starting?
Thanks

Found it!

Oil Filter Torque.jpg
If you get yourself one of thesae and hook it up to a torque wrench:

Currently about £6 on fleabay, measure across the flats on the new filter for the correct size.

Cranking without starting is either by just short starting and stopping before it fires up or you can disconnect the coil packs, I do the former simply because that is how I have always done it.

Thanks for that info, first trip in the morning to see if they have them oil filter adapters in my local auto factors otherwise stall the change till next week. And will give short bursts on the key when oil is changed.
Much appreciated.

If you don't have a hoist taking off the front right wheel gives you good access to the filter.

Also fill the oil filter with oil before fitting (prime) and put some oil on the filter rubber seal so it doesn’t drag and give a false feeling of being done up.

Apart from that it’s straight forward. I have a pdf at work with pics on doing a 4200 oil filter change.

The oil filter is mounted near horizontal so I wouldn't bother trying to fill it before fitting as you'll just make a lot of mess.

Also as others have said it is a good idea to get oil pressure before starting, i just disconnect all the the injector plugs but the coil packs is another good one, then hit the starter until i see oil pressure. i also do this if it has been stood a while with no use. Probably a bit over the top but makes me happy.

If the oil level is right before you you remove it, then you can just measure what is removed and put the same back in.

The filter tool is necessary for removal as access is quite tight, both sump and oil tank plugs need copper washers or they will leak, you can reanneal them if you cant get a new one in time.

You can fill the filter half way and get it on without too much mess. This will prime the filter and you less likely to have any pressure issues on startup.

Thanks for the tips everyone.
Managed to get the oil and filter changed.Only oil leak seems to be the old oil that dripped onto the cover tray when draining the tank. Might be best taking the tray off next time as a fair bit must of gone on there.
Much appreciated

Whilst under there take a good look at the oil/water pumps especially around the weep hole for coolant leakage that can destroy the oil pump drive shaft with corrosion.

Thanks will check that out.
Also it was probably the wrong time to try the air con yesterday to coincide with an oil change, as I was giving the car another test run yesterday evening I pulled up and left the car running to look underneath for leaks and to my horror a leak what looked to be in the oil filter area turned out to condensation from the air con.
