Hi I got a CEL and when I used an OBD reader got a P0102 error . I have done the battery reset and tried to clear it using my scanner but comes back after a short while. I have checked that my gas cap is closed properly. I have 17K miles on a 02 CC and I drive in sports mode and manual shift.

The error code is to do with MAF circuit? maybe it needs cleaning? What do people think? Has anyone encountered this exact same code? I only got the code upon some spirited driving.
thanks in advance.

Depends whether you think performance has been affected , if things are back to normal i'd leave well alone , if your noticing a slight intemittance on tick over or gaining smooth power delivery then remove the Maf sensor and clean only with a recomended maf cleaner , the is a photographic sticky in the tech section on how to do this , its not a common problem , but italian electrics do give a few false alarms , most of which are cured with a battery reset

Hi Loz. How are you? Thanks for the reply. Like I said-I got the CEL when I was doing some spirited driving so I may have dislodged a hose or something. I also had a look at your excellent muf cleaning- I mean MAF cleaning post. Just wondered how or what tool you used to take off the 3 hose connectors (big jubilee type thingamigits). can I go into Halfords and ask for a Maf cleaner or can I use electrical contact cleaner? Should I use carb cleaner to take off the black gunge on the butterfly valve?
BTW my car drives like normal.
cheers once again

Better to go into a local trade auto factors for the Maf cleaner Halfords dont stock a MAF specific one , i use a small spike to remove the hose clips , a star screwdriver, for the Maf sensor itself , carb cleaner will be fine for the butterfly , worth getting a can of compressed air to blow all the **** away once you have had a go with the carb cleaner , as i said the odd italian electical foible should be expected 9 times out of 10 its a false alarm but should be treated with caution first

If its not a normal jubilee clip, you need one of these CLIC hose pliers. They are double action and used to release and do up CLIC clips:

Gents, what difference is there between a MAF cleaner and a carb / injection cleaner? Both are solvent only and the Wynn's that Halfords does sell specifically states it's fine for oxygen sensors? I ask as I've just today bought a can with that specific purpose in mind!........

Well brake and clutch cleaner will work then as it is all essentially the same thing. I think the trick is not to rub the filament just blast the crud off with pressure out of the can, beleive they are very delicate. Let us know how you get on.

Cheers Matt. The guy (well kid) at Halfords (who was actually really helpful) also mentioned brake / clutch cleaner, so it all bodes well. How's Freya? Well I hope?

What I was told when looking for a MaF cleaner , was that you had to be careful what solvent you use , and definately no physical touching/ wiping of the filament /sensor, different solvents can leave a residue of film which is why its best to go for a specific Maf sensor cleaner

Yes she is on the mend thanks. For the sake of a few quid I suppose it it best to do as Loz says and use only MAF cleaner.
