CCTV - Outdoor

I would always steer people away from any battery operated system. POE has many advantages.
The cabling is cheap, but needs to be threaded and hidden in the building to the cameras.

Anything that involves cloud storage is gonna cost you. And those costs escalate over time. The system is cheap, but the storage is where they make their money.

A POE system needs to be professionally installed so that it re-boots in the event of a power failure without human intervention. It is no DIY job - unless you are an NIEIC standard electrician able to issue a certificate of compliance to all electrical regulations.

A CCTV system will not issue any certificate - they are not regulated (as far as I know).

You only do it once, so my philosophy is to go for the very best system that I can stretch to that is also future proof.

Apart from the Birmingham registration prefix wtf does POE mean?

Power over Etnernet. A way of supplying power and network (specifically non-wireless network) connectivity over one cable (typically the same format as a normal network cable.

Happy to provide further details on the technical implementation but for the average user it means 'Plug your camera into a POE switch and it will light up like magic....'

Sorry. Completely and utterly trivial unless it's been made over complex to to deliberately bump the costs of the system / maintenance. POE is also trivial, but running cables is a PITA.

Well yes. Once every 8-10 years tops I suspect ;)

Thats your view. Mine is different. The guy asked about CCTV, I gave him my view and what I have had installed after weighing pros and cons of systems. The system I have is superb. The right choice for me. Your view on POE I dont share and I'm no fool to be taken in by some way of cranking up costs.

Forgot to add, my has cloud, but unlike many, there is no charge, so history of video taken from triggers can be surveyed and down loaded.

As wiring would have been inappropriate over a cotswold stone cottage, these are solar, WiFi and can bung 'em anywhere as they are stand alone and as many cos they're cheap

It's not a question of cranking up costs. Running cables is a PITA and needs to be paid for. But the whole reboot thing is a laugh. However, you're getting what you want and all is good.

Without starting an argument. When you are all talking about Wi-Fi with regards to CCTV are you talking about household internet Wi-Fi? So if I want to put a camera on the outside of the house where my phone won’t connect to the household Wi-Fi it’ll need to be wired??

You don't need to be an electrician to fit POE or Cat 5/6/7 cablin. It's not mains power.
When I rewired my house, I put in Cat6 cabling as I was making a mess anyway so an extra couple of chasings and throwing a few extra cables here and there is well worth it.

Im fine with wiring stuff. Shouldnt be too hard in our bungalow as there’s reasonable access from the eaves to the upstairs storage.

Yes. Or you can sort your wifi out. Most stuff that comes with the internet provider is utter rubbish. There are many better options.

We do have a booster I think the main problem is all our walls, internal and external are solid.

Nope. Mine are both outside. Penetrates thock cotswold stone, double. WiFi hotspots each 2 - 3 rooms away, each with solid walls.

The push alerts and all feeds traverse their server, and transmitted as normal as long as your mobile is connected to some Internet, either via phone or WiFi. I get the alerts wherever I am, yawning gob at the dentist or turning summat up on the lathe in the workshop down in the garden via WiFi hotspot

The boosters are also rubbish on the whole. Unless you have something sensible to start with. Just boils down to shouting louder in a crowded pub.

I use Ubiquiti stuff. Google mesh has good reviews on here as well.

So if it looses internet connection presumably it will it still work and record onto its own SD card?
