CCTV - Outdoor

Someone tried to open my car last night at about 0200, neighbour’s doorbell cam picked it up.

Any recommendations for outdoor CCTV or the like? It’s not something I’ve ever looked at so don’t really know where to begin. Would like something that “protects” house drive and garage.

I use Tapo indoor and outdoor cameras both in France and in the U.K. very easy to set up on your phone, live feed, night vision, motion detection, recordings on SD card etc etc.
quite reasonably priced too.

The thing that puts me off the doorbell ones is I’m not sure they act as a deterrent??

How do these things store the films? My last experience of CCTV was changing VHS tapes every 8 hours!

You just pop a mini SD card into the camera and it stores any movement recording on the Tapo.
Very easy to play back on your phone.

CCTV will act as a deterrent if it is visible !
You need it to stop the crime, rather than record it.

I have 4 infrared cameras at the front of the house, clearly visible in the daytime and glowing red from all angles at night.

They record to a hard drive which is locked away and although I can have alerts to my phone etc I don’t bother coz there would be sod all I could do other that watch them.

Don't really care if they do or not, but the quality is remarkable IMHO. The video is stored in the Ring cloud (at least for Ring) which is an issue (understandably for some), as is all access to the live feeds and so on. Personally I'm not worried as I know I can delimit my networks so that even if the Ring network was compromised, nothing else would be and should it fail, I'm not going to be crying in the cold

Cite? I mean not being funny but there seems precious little evidence these days that it does act as a deterrent. Even if there is clear CCTV imagery, it appears, for things like burglary, the police don't follow up anyway (of course these may be media reports exagerrating but from personal experience round hear antisocial behaviour on CCTV is pretty much ignored)

That’s really the point I was trying to make, recording it doesn’t help, the only chance you have is visible cameras in the hope that they will put people off.

Since my GT suffered a pellet wound, and our forecourt is large and prominent I wanted a simple to install alert system. One high power movement sensor triggered security light covering each of the forecourt and entrance path coupled with solar powered security cameras covering each area. Cameras push alerts to both my wife and myself, adjustable sensitivity, together with voice communication, timers, switch off, and siren. Been in for 6 months. This brand also do a version with controllable gimbal to pan. Fine and reliable, very effective both as deterrent and alarm/door bell, voice com.

I've had 4-off yi cameras for a number of years.
Couple covering the drive, one looking out to the front garden gate, and one in the garage.
All WiFi with sd cards, linked to PC app or phone app.
Can also ask Alexa and the video stream appears on our telly.
Cheap as chips, been 100% reliable, 1080p resolution, night vision, human detection etc etc.

As someone who has worked with criminals for 35 years I can assure you all that there is little that deters in the UK.

With the sad state of our Police these days you would be better off saying they called you a poof... at least that way they 'may' attend one day.
