£9k-£20k price range, next to a picture of a Sport GTS which is £25-£40k (or £48k at DL’s). The magazines are often worse than the manufacturer adverts that say ‘from £15k (model shown £37950)’. 80672

Another potential I reckon and highly rated by Iain Tyrell in Cheshire.

Triumph Dolly engine in those. You really want to find one of the Carlson ones, they also did 9000 too

According to Iain Tyrell Saab actually made it into a Good engine rather than the BL ones.

If I remember correctly despite it being a BL engine SAAB were using it for a few years before it went into a Triumph.

1st and reverse have a habit of selecting themselves at the same time on the 900s

I had 4 varieties of 900 turbos at different times in the 80s. Loved them, except the convertible 16S, which demonstrated scuttle shake admirably! Incredibly safe too. My friend (now brother in law) T boned a van (who's driver wasn't looking) whilst boost testing post the installation of a water injection system and only suffered seat belt bruising. The driver's seat in the van was the only area survivable, the rest a crumpled mess, contents found 1/4 mile away! They don't make cars like that anymore!

Saab’s are great usable classics. I had a 9000CS and a 9-5 Aero estate.
Used to have them looked after by a specialist near Stockport at Padfield. It was a Saab treasure trove, always got thrown the keys to some old Saab sat around when I took mine for a service. Got a carlsson just like the one above once!

Wonder if that's what happened to some friends of ours that were driving from oop North in their 9000 when the gearbox self destructed in the service station car park....

They were a little late :)

Old boss had a 9000. When I was looking to replace my aging 156 I took it for a spin. First turbo car I'd ever driven. And nearly the last of any type :)

Oooh yes ... my Dad had a Saab Carlson Turbo in Black in maybe 88 or 89. Probabaly the quickest car I had ever been in at that point.

SAAB used the engine under license from BL when it was 1709cc. It caused so many problems, SAAB bought the rights to it and developed their own version. It was bored out to 1850cc and then 1998cc and became an almost bullet proof engine (weak part was the jack shaft to drive the water pump), unfortunately the gearbox wasn't up to the job.
The 9000 engine is a different proposition and extremely over engineered with the 2.3 capable of 400-500hp on stock internals. The 2litre engine is sought after by the Vauxhall guys for an upgrade in performance.

We had a 99 turbo on the 'Piston heads' tour to the Sherborne castle classic and supercar show, (back in the days when we could actually have shows ) think it was a one owner original car, immaculate, cant find any pics at the moment.

My dad bought a 900 Turbo in light metallic blue with blue velour in 1979 when they first came into this country. He had it for 7 years and mechanically it was perfect but it started to rust after a year. Saab has it back numerous times for rust especially around the sunroof and window trims.
