I think you are a minority then looking at the demand at auction for the likes of Golf's, Pug 205's, GT/E's etc.... Ford RS Turbo... could go on.

I’d suggest the vast majority of the population don’t want any of these cars. Whilst the majority of car collecting speculators know that these are the oft mentioned ones to buy so raising prices by market demand.

Let's agree to disagree on this one then. Time will tell.

I’m not disagreeing they’ll go up, I’m just saying the majority of the people in this country wouldn’t want one. That’s a fact. There’s no way whatsoever that the majority of car buyers desire these cars. I do agree that they’re good options if you wish to buy cars as investments, it’s just not for me. I would buy a car I desired as an investment if I thought that it were a good place to put my money, but for me personally, I don’t see anything worth buying at present.

Issue for me there is I don’t desire any of them. 20 years ago I desired a 3200, a 993, an S2000, a 360 but have never been into hot hatches.

I am happily in that minority. A golf - no matter the model - doesn’t feel special to me like a 3200 would. I would rather spend an extra £500-1000 a year in upkeep for a car I truly aspire to drive every week end

I think more than identifying the gems that could explode in value, I am really interested in what this thread throws in terms of ideas for cars that would be fun to own, without being ruinous.

As someone highlighted above the MC12, F40 etc... will prob do well over the next 10years, but they are not really something that can be contemplated.

Identifying something that can be had for a reasonable budget £10-60k and enjoyed without losing anything over a happy ownership is where my curiosity lies.
Of course, nobody has a crystal ball... it would equate to asking which stock will do well over the next 10years !

I think your pockets must be more accommodating than mine :D

I'm perfectly happy in my GTi-6 and Hyundai Coupe. Neither are ruinous to run and very much the opposite. Still plenty of fun and enjoyment to be had though. I'm perfectly happy with a £2.99 bottle of wine as well though. Ignorance is bliss :)

Well until you own one and drive one you can't comment. I've owned three Golf GTI's and 4 3200's and the Golf has far superior build quality and is much less of a headache to own than the trident. Prices confirm this too. There is NO market for 3200 (super small) but for MK1 GOlf's the following is huge hence there being parts still made!!!!

Not sure about this investment malarkey. It’s one of the things that stops me buying all the classic car magazines. Once they’d driven everything (about 25 years ago), they turned to the financial side of our hobby, but it’s always been speculation and man maths - no-one looks at the real world running/repair/storage costs. It’s all too dull, but they are real. There’s no way I’m going to add up what I’ve spent on motoring in my lifetime - it would kill my enjoyment stone dead.

We used to have nigh on 20 cars to run/repair/tax and test. It was impossible. But trying was fun - that was the hobby. It wasn’t just the driving that provided pleasure, but the people we met along the way and all the hard graft that went into getting to the driving stage.

Now I’m older, the numbers are more sensible, but the source of the enjoyment remains the same.

The ‘majority’ of our friends don’t share this interest at all. They drive what we would call boring cars, but they’ve picked up from the media that we have made good investments.

The truth is they are lovely to look at and fun to drive, but they’re bloody hard work.

I'd rather jump in my Golf GTI and drive at ten tenths than jump in my GTS and drive that the same. Maybe I'm getting old before my time but modern cars do very little for me.

I'm very much the same and I think it is great that a pretty basic average car to most can be enjoyed so much. I have friends that just won't buy old cars as they are old and have the always are always broken aren't they perception?! Their loss. Literally their loss. They spend/lose more on one car than I do on 10+!!

I am glad I have my feet firmly on the ground and always will do. It is to your benefit to as you are much more appreciative of simple small things. Then when you have something really nice you really really really appreciate it and love it all the more. I have walked into my garage maybe 50 times this week and still can't believe how lucky I am to be able to look at the TVR I just bought that sits in there. I have not even driven it yet so that will be a new whole different level!

I think the Mk1 TTQS will do well but not so sure about the R129 SL500. I've had a few and thought the same but sold my last one last year as felt they had topped out for a long while and even then won't go up too much compared to the sometimes horrible running costs if you get unlucky.

Well one of the best cars I have bought in the last 2 years since coming back to Europe is my Porsche Boxster 987.1 3.2 S fully optioned and a factory order paint colour match.
Easy to work on once you get used to the flat 6.
Build quality probably the best out there.
Easy to maintain.
With only 280 BHP you can really drive it.
Definitely worth more than when I bought it.
My only regret is why did I never buy one before.
Just my thoughts.

Old school hot hatches were, and still are I would imagine, fun cars. Here’s a couple of mine from back in the day. There were many others!
