Im not sure these comparisons help much TBH.

If you purchased a cheap car rather than a used one potential you may be more accepting of a few rough edges. However if you pay for a top end car you would be rather miffed if you had a rattle in your £xxx,000 car.

Still want one?
Honestly, I’m on the fence.
I had a sit in a non HSE and it wasn’t as nice a place to be as my Merc.
There is also a reliability question which is niggling me......the Merc is faultless. If I wanted Agro I’d buy a Maserati.
I think I need to drive my ideal HSE leather clad spec/ colour before I consider taking the plunge ( 5 months away). I’m in no hurry.
A warranty seems essential- a little disappointing they can’t get it right.

a little disappointing they can’t get it right.

Where I live, I am seemingly surrounded by JLR employees - most of whom drive Velars or Discos on corporate lease schemes and pretty much all that I have spoken to have had niggles with their vehicles, despite often only owning them for 6 months!

Who wants to be just happy , i wanna be excited and ovecome , apart from the Alfa the rest are just variations on the same jelly mould

But I call BS on that. Every Alfa owner will have been challenged as to why they didn't buy a C class, 3 series (or even an A4) that they will have spent so much time convincing others that their Alfa is a great car, they have bought into their own hype.

I bet not one owner has said "I wish I had bought a 330 BMW" even if they did. People who buy Alfas (and generally Italian cars) are willing to look past issues to have something pretty / unusual. As the old saying goes "Show me a beautiful wife and I will show you a husband who is sick and tired of putting up with her ****!"

Mercedes seem to do the nicest interiors at the moment.

The interior of mine, a lowly C, is of S class quality and spec.
It’s pretty faultless.View attachment 71350
Personally I never got on with the stuck on screen effect. They fixed it a bit with the C Class facelift but the newer cars double screen looks a lot nicer IIRC.

I’ve never understood the Velar unless you get a cheap one. In the UK the nice ones are too near RRS pricing IMHO.

Sorry Whattie I have to disagree.

I have a different rental car every week, mainly MB and BMW.

The C looks OK but its almost all plastic and not very robust (rentals get a lot of abuse) even the 'leather' is fake. The gloss work scratches so easy and the satnav is the same as a KIA.

The S looks similar but is far better and uses real skin and miles better tech... as it.should for >£50k

BMW appear to fair better, not as nice looking but better materials.

The Cs panels feel like they are made of tin foil compared to the ones back in the 80s... but I guess MPG has driven all makers to save weight.

No problem Shafrane, we’ll agree to differ.

The result doesn't surprise me I've had a Guilia for around 2.5 years now and a number of previous Alfa's and its streets ahead in quality & drivability. I've done 43k in it and In that time I've had exactly zero issues, they dragged there feet Alfa bringing this out but it's certainly paid off in my eyes.

Results don’t surprise me.
The guilia is an outstanding car. I know 3 people with a Veloce version and all say it’s easily the best car they’ve had.
Is the ‘infotainment’ marginally easier to use on a 3 series? I don’t know, and I don’t care, none of the people I know have complained about it in the Alfa. What it does do though is, irrespective of looks, drive much better. Steering especially, handling and ride all superior.

Mainstream uk motoring press, whatcar, autocar, auto express etc are heavily biased to German marques, especially VAG. This is well known, someone will correct me if im wrong, but I believe the parent companies of all these publications are German?

Not saying 3 series, c-class, A4 etc are bad cars, they are not, they are all very competent vehicles, it’s just the press will refuse to acknowledge anything else can be better ‘overall’ and mark rivals down for wishy washy nonsense like infotainment, or ‘perceived quality’, whatever that is. Maybe it’s because if ‘real’ quality is measured even Hyundai, Kia etc are actually ahead now.....apart from a glossy infotainment screen of course.

I can understand why that Lexus GS won too, that is a high quality product. Styling again is subjective, but if I was to recommend a large saloon to someone who just wanted a trouble free, comfortable, quality car it would be miles ahead of a 5 series, A6 etc as a secondhand car.

Velar? Is this the ultimate example of the new phrase ‘perceived quality’? These in a high spec look very fancy in the showroom. The technology is impressive. Unfortunately the ‘real quality’ is sadly lacking. I used to work with a guy who’s son worked as a technician at land rover. Some of the photos he had on his phone from the workshop trying to fix electronic issues were a real eye opener. Obviously they both would never consider actually owning one themselves, certainly if out of warranty.

I must add to this semi rant, I do have a couple of Alfa’s and a Lexus!
(although I have owned several BMW’s and VW’s too, and loads of other stuff)
