Buying New Parts

If I want a part for a BMW I can have it here in 3 days even if it has to come from the factory in Germany but if I want a new bit for the 3200 and it's not on the shelf at Eurospares or Scuderia car parts it seems to take 2 weeks for them to get it.

Who do you guys use? Are main dealers quicker?

(I've looked and can't find an answer so apologies if there's a section somewhere that already deals with this.)

I tended to use MD for parts, where I could, for the 3200, especially when I found out they were normally cheaper.

Nope this is often the case and its often longer than 2 weeks I have waited nearly 6 weeks for parts from Italy to turn up. There is always breakers like David Askew or the gut in Northern Ireland who is also very good.

MD is either a few days or a week from Italy

Eurospares is usually 2 weeks, sometimes 4 weeks

With BMW they have manufactured tens of thousands of cars many of them with common parts, the financial risk of keeping a large stock list of parts is pretty minimal for them as the parts are fast moving... However for Maserati or even more extreme example such as Lotus they cannot sink a huge amount of money on keeping parts in stock because they won't shift quickly and pose a financial risk.

Who's the guy in Northern Ireland Davy? Very useful for me to know :)

Thanks, like you say second hand stuff hasn't been a problem.

I don't think it's about holding stock compared with BMW as it's just a not very well set up sourcing system, I had the same issue with my 147 took Alfa weeks to get a heat shield and they were still rolling out of the factory at the time!

I've not used a main dealer yet as the nearest is in Solihull and a right pain to get to, will any of them send you parts by post?

Use Ross at Meriden Modena and get a 20% forum discount on most parts.

He is happy to post at cost too.

I thought it was 10% off?

Regardless with the forum discount Meridian won't order it direct from the factory for you but rather add it to their weekly stock order... So if you want priority mail from Italy you need to pay full whack.

I don't mind waiting a week or two but ES can take a little bit too long sometimes

Who are MD?

Eurospares were quick enough (<1 week) when I needed bits that Scuderia said would take 3-4 weeks!

Depends if they have it on the shelf I guess?

I am sure ES' stock orders fall behind the MDs in terms of priority

Md = main dealer

Yeah sorry I should have said eurospares and scuderia both had to order direct from Italy. Not sure why one said they would get it so much quicker. Same price too.

The dealers and I imagine ES and Scuderia, order from the factory on specific days. For Ross at Meridien it is a Thursday. The parts (assuming they are in stock) then turn up on the following Tues / Weds. If you need it sooner it would have to go an an express service.

It's useful to understand how the Factory ordering system works (as Zep alluded to above). Places like Eurospares and Scuderiacarparts order on what's called a "stock order" - this is placed once a week and takes up to a week to arrive. If you place your order just after the stock order goes in you can easily wait two weeks.

Then there's VOR - orders go in at 11am daily (Mon-Fri) for delivery the next working day.

Stock orders are much cheaper than VOR orders which allows ES, etc to offer such a discount to the RRP. Aside from parts I actually keep in stock (like filters), everything I order is VOR as I need the cars turned around quickly.

To reiterate to an extend what others have said, I've placed an order through MD (Ross at Meridien Modena) which included stock parts, and factory parts, and had it on my door step within 3 days (including shipping up to Scotland) - it all depends on when in their stock ordering schedule your order goes in I suppose.

Thanks, I will try Meridien. Really don’t want to use my local main dealer and they’re not that local anyway.

Yeah that makes sense, just don't know why the Scuderia wait was multiple weeks (3+ I believe vs. 1 for ES)
