Building underground garage ?

I also wonder about the dryness and also whether insurers have a view on insurance /flooding risk.
Just in preparation for my 250GTO delivery

When I was working for Toyota at there Motorsports in Cologne every compétition vehicle they have built is stored underground and they have a lot of cars down there.
I'm guessing it will probably withstand a Nuclear attack.
I wish I had some pictures back from that time in my working life.
Ferrari used to use their wind tunnels as they didn't have one.

I'd be keeping an eye out to see if a neighbor is thinking of selling and maybe redevelop the property maybe.

Much of the cost of building is the cost of what is in the ground, therefore basements, or underground structures are quite costly per m3. Many local authorities are quite anti basement / underground construction these days too. Anything is possible if you are prepared to pay, however I wonder if this is really cost effective as purely a garage. At least what you are suggesting lends itself to top down construction, although site constraints might be an issue and can vastly affect cost.

That said once did a private double story underground garage with each floor facing a centre revolving floor, it made a very cool home for some very interesting cars!

I have an architect coming to look at some ideas I have for the house itself, and the feasibility of the underground garage.

Just round the corner a chap built his own house with a large basement, so I am hoping planners would be sympathetic, if we get that far.

I like the look of this. Daily car goes on top then the occasional car under. No hassle getting the car out.

I think that's a good idea.
The double one is a bit like digging a mine shaft though!
What precautions prevent the cars accidently rolling if the handbrake fails etc.
Also can you imagine being in the car and lowered down by mistake while still in it, your own coffin.

That's a positive, although views change, you want an Architect and engineer experienced in similar structures. Hopefully there will be sufficient space to allow for the excavation to be battered back, otherwise temp sheet piling or a contig wall may be needed. You will probably need two forms of waterproofing but this is easy to resolve although contractor competence will be important, especially with using caltite etc.

Regarding site constraints there will also need to be consideration to undermining adjacent structures, think 45 degree from lowest level as a starting point.

There are companies that do the whole thing for the two/three story lifts both as singles or doubles.

Very interesting Sam. I've been looking at doing a similar thing but at the same time as a house build. Haven't got as many cars now though currently but still looking to do it regardless as makes more sense when you are building a house at the same time.

Happy to collaborate thoughts, ideas and info. You're welcome to pop round if you're passing my way any time to chat, see the site and the plans we had drawn up to date. I can email anything I have regardless so drop me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll send anything over.
