Hi all, I searched old posts and could not find a reference to this. Has anyone tried to substitute Brembo 17z 6 pot calipers to the front of a 4200? Sorry if this has been beaten to death before. Ed

I’m sure someone here fitted or had for sale a Formula Dynamics brake kit a while back

Thanks Oneball, over on Maseratilife, we have been discussing rebuilding calipers on 4200's. It seems that rebuild kits for the fronts have gone AWOL. I was thinking that with so many cars using 17z that repair parts would be available plus if they fit, you would get an inexpensive upgrade to 6 pots. Not to put down ML, there are many capable people there, but I posted here because you blokes really go outside the box on car repairs. More hands on IMO. Ed

It would depend on a few issues.

1. As these are lug mounted, you would need to work out if the holes in the lugs are the same size and as the originals. If not a radial mounting caliper and adapter would be an easier fit.

2. The centre line of the caliper relative to the mountings would also need to be the same.

3. The fluid connection would need to be checked - although this would not be particularly tricky to sort if the rest of the issues noted above were ok.

Thank you Zep. 17z was used on Range Rover, VW, Porsche etc. I was kind of hoping someone might have a sample of both lying about that could be checked. I just did brakes last summer, but am planning ahead for next time.

What about the 6 pots from a Ghibli? I'm half tempted to pinch the ones on my Brother's car for a trial fit...

They are radically mounted, so you’ll need a bracket. And because the disc diameter is different there will be issues of pad overlap.

Didn't know how the standard callipers are mounted so thanks for the clarification. I was thinking of using the larger Ghibli discs though.

From what I can recall of changing the discs and pads on my brothers car last summer, I think the radial mounts are like the 330's on a gta, they have a bracket that effectively makes them lug mounted.

I had AP 6 pots on my gransport which fitted behind the larger gransport wheel with a cigarette paper to spare. @BennyD owns them now so perhaps he can help with some measurements of what is the maximum fit?

The issue is the nose and tail of the calipers and the swept area of the pads are designed into the calipers, so there are limits to how big or small you can go with a give caliper design.

No worries. You are right, there is a bracket to mount the radial calipers, but the mounts on the hub will certainly be different, so a bracket will be needed. I’m afraid the PCD on the Ghibli is different too, so the discs won’t fit on the hub.

If you want 6 pots and bigger discs, this has been suggested a few times lately and I can help with the calipers, discs and brackets.

Good discussion, the 17z caliper is not radial mount, and has a 5.75" ctr to ctr mount. They are designed for 18" wheels, and 330mm rotors (our size). The stock Brembos have 4.85" mount. I am looking at purchase/ fab. of a dog-bone adapter for mounting. I'll keep everyone posted on how things work out. BTW stock calipers are very heavy for their size.

The 6 pot APs fit behind the 18” FD wheels I have fitted just fine. I’ve hardly used the spyder since I fitted them so, as yet, I can’t confirm their performance. I will, hopefully, be getting her back on the road this summer.
