Brake disc fracture

Re the skim I think 3-9 months is a bit mean, I used Mike Roberts service and it transformed my 32's brakes, which were marginal beforehand. I can't remember how long it was before I sold the car, a few thousand miles at least, but there was no sign of deterioration or warping. The standard disks are very thick and can take a considerable amount of wear and a very fine skim before getting anywhere near min. thickness, they usually get scrapped due to wearing a lip or damage rather than getting too thin, and garages make more margin on replacement.

Having said that, Mike is good, but I don't think he would be able to do much with a cracked disk!

I can only speak from my own experience. I am pleased your discs took the reskim better than mine, mine were obviously too far gone.

You say a few thousand miles, well, mine did about 5k then it all went wrong, hence my estimation of 3-9 months. I struggled on for a bit, then bit the bullet and bought some new ones and all my brake problems went away.

Nothing against Mike, he is a top bloke, its just a bit much to expect re skimmed discs to do another 24-30k miles.

Fair enough Matt - agree 5k miles wouldn't really be good value.

Doubt I've ever seen 30k from a set of discs! Maybe I really do have lead feet!

Mine are the factory disks and have done 40k so far. New pads at 33k (bit dodgy for a week or so) and are still fine. Doubt I will get past 50k though.

Thats pretty good BB......the ratio of pads to discs is around 3 sets to one...but all depends on the driving style!

Now sorted!
New discs fitted, 1 hour a side including a load of time cleaning an generally messing around in there!
Fitting replacement discs on the front is an absolute doddle, child's play if you will. So much so, my daughter (8) helped me and took a load of pictures as we went along the way.
I will have alook through her photos and see if any are of use to post up here!
The fractue that started the whole thing off in the first place isn't actually that bad and hasn't got any worse for the little use the car has had over the last few weeks, but I feel so much better having swapped them now.

The marking on the edge of the new discs are as follows, as I know this has been asked before:

00 08H AA MIN TH 1.181" = 30MM BREMBO B8H

Thanks for the help, advise and encouragement as always,

Regards

David
