BMW Supra

I have been watching some of the YouTube reviews on the new "Toyota" Supra (BMW Z4) and I feel as though it is a total cop out marketing exercise. It seems to me that it's basically an attempt to sell more BMW Z4 Coupe's (Aka The Shoe) with a Toyota badge twinned with an iconic model name (Supra) than they would have if it was just marketed as what it is... a BMW Z4 Coupe...

I feel as though the new Supra should have been built on the Lexus LC chassis with a turbo straight 6 engine rather than the Lexus hybrid or V8 options - perhaps only the engine could have been where BMW and Toyota should have collaborated by only sticking in their engine... Not whatever this thing is... the proportions are all wrong and once inside it is a beemer

For shame Toyota

End rant :)

I didnt realise the new supra was out, or that it was based on a Z4 - havent been keeping up with the news!
It looks Toyotery from the front and back, but the flanks look like a Z4 with a nasty bodykit!! not that the Z4 is a bad car - my brother managed kudos from a caterham chap as he out cornered him on a track day* - But the supra is a big car, the Z4 isnt... the Supra is a GT car, not a track toy, thats the job of the GT85... Toyota has had enough time, skill and money to design its own large 2+2 coupe

Like Fifty says, why not use Toyotas current large GT coupe as the base? that seems to make more sense to me.

* we are all comfortable with the fact that the Caterham can easily out maneuver a Z4 on track!! this happened to be a caterham driving well within its limits and the Z4 all sorts of sideways!

They also did that classic thing of making the production car look **** compared to the concept. Missed opportunity.

On the Z4....The pictures of the new one I just didn't like....Parked next to a silver one last week and I must say I really liked it. Saw a new Supra and it doesn't work....It should but as said above the concept looked the business....This doesn't.

On the Z4 Coupe. They haven't made one for years so surely the Supra is based on the new Z4 which hasn't got a Coupe in the range.

On the positive it has the same identical engine and tune as my M140i, the B58, that Morgan are also using in their new Morgan 6.
If you wish, the wick can be turned up from stock 335 BHP to well over 400 with a flash tune and no other mods.

I saw a new Z4 on the road the other day... It was on a dual carriageway at national speed limit and it was much faster than my Merc CLS 350 cdi. Probably up there with the Maser if not a little faster as it is not as heavy. It then started hammering it down with rain and they had to pull off to put their roof down which did make me chuckle as I smoked passed in my oil burner

There is no Z4 Coupe in the current range (yet)... Which is the point I am trying to make.

In the older generations of Z cars the coupe was not a big seller. Always an obscure car with a small following and even a point of ridicule e.g.... The bread van... The shoe. BMW needed better marketing so they came up with a plan:

Call it a Toyota Supra and watch someone buy the first one for $1m at a charity auction and a long list of back orders because the old Supras have become icons

Ah I see you. I loved the bread van. Drove one many years ago and it was loads of fun....Looks always divided opinion though. The shoe...never heard the last one being called that. Like the show as well and in M form it was a cracking car to drive.

Looked at the new Z4 and it's as long as the 2 series Cabrio but with two less seats. And both have the same size boot.
Nevermind, the resale value of the E89 Z4 should hold up with its hardtop roof and decent looks

Andy is right on here. The z3mc was a good car to drive (had 2 of them) and this is reflected in their value these days. The z4mc however is epic and one of the best driver's cars of its type. If you want a belter of a fun car for £20k, it's fantastic value. The looks are colour sensitive and I think the Bangle-era stuff is ageing well. A nice z4mc with CSL wheels and a couple of subtle mods is a great, great car.

The Supra is shite. The new z4 is ok but hardly small now and I'd still buy a Boxster every time if I wanted a 2 seater cabrio. It pisses all over everything else.

Never really liked the small BMWs. Then they released the concept car for the new Z4, and it looked fab - see below. I was quite interested in getting one, and signed up for the emails/news.

Then the actual car was released, and surprise surprise it did not greatly resemble the concept, and was more like the old model. So we scrapped the idea with alacrity!

There was talk of a carbon tub when they showed the concept car

I did not realise how much better the concept looked... the front end of the new production Z4 just looks like same design as the front end on the 1/2/3/4/7 series which is a shame as the previous Z cars had a different design language to the rest of the range
