BLIND, FOOLISH IMPULSE PURCHASE OF A 4200 - the update thread

Original thread here.

So this weekend I'm going to try to spruce up the interior and do a bit of servicing work on my lovely new 4200.

I was thinking:
  • gearbox oil
  • brake fluid
  • air filter
  • engine oil/filter

  1. Is there anything else pressing on a 90k mile car that's due a service? Do spark plugs really make a big difference?
  2. Who do you recommend as suppliers of these parts? I'm looking at a combo of Scuderia and Opie oils but I'd like to get them in one place - plus neither supplies the crush washers or other washers/seals I need for the various oil changes.
  3. Crush washers - does anyone have the dimensions of the washers for (a) the fill and drain plugs on the CC gearbox, and (b) the sealing washers on the engine? I know the latter requires one 22mm and one 18mm (interior diameter) but there's nothing about thickness and outer diameter.
  4. One question I haven't been able to answer is which oil to use in the gearbox? My research suggests I need transaxle oil as the diff shares the same casing? So would this be the right stuff? https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-6363-c...synthetic-car-gearbox-oil-formerly-taf-x.aspx
I've also noticed I have a small box in the boot labelled 'Loudlink', and a Belkin Bluetooth transmitter. However, I can't get my phone (iPhone 7) to see any such Bluetooth network when the ignition is on. Are there some set up steps I would need to take to make this visible?

There are some great guides that I'll use to carry out the work - thanks again to everyone on the forum for the wealth of knowledge!

Agree with the plugs diagnosis - the spark plug gaskets can weep oil and it will contaminate the plugs, eventually causing a misfire from what Ive read...
Id do the coolant too. Not knowing when it was last changed, its an annual service item...
Might be worth checking the pollen filter...There are draining issue associated with this area. If the drain becomes blocked, it can cause problems...
Apparently air con benefits from yearly servicing although it's not something I see frequently mentioned TBH...

I think I saved a bulletin re: gearbox oil. Ill have to search that out...
Meanwhile, here's a list of FAQ's that you might find of interest...?

The loudlink is a replacement for the boot mounted CD multi disc drive, it emulates the CD drive and depending on model, you put music on a SD card instead.

Gearbox oil...there was an update apparently, in response to "reluctant" 1st >2nd gear selection. It was implemented with a shifter bell crank lever replacement. (Service Bulletin #236 )
The oil was updated from Castrol 70W to Castrol BOT270a

Gear box filter has been upgraded, the old style one would sheer off after a couple of changes.

That’s interesting, I’ve never seen that before. Are you sure it wasn’t an Aston Martin service bulletin?

If you are feeling very fastidious you could also change the CC fluid. If you are doing the gearbox oil you need an o-ring for the gearbox filter whether you change it or re-use the old one.

Thanks, I’ll see if I can’t find those too. Why does nobody offer a “service package”?

It had a new F1 pump 5k and 2 years ago so I think that should still be fine?

The service schedule does not give a replacement schedule for the CC fluid. As it is basically ATF it will be hydroscopic but at 2 years you are probably ok.

As for the service package, as there are a lot of things that are optional, I think it is a bit of a minefield. But a list is certainly something worth thinking about.

The loudlink is not always visible for pairing. Usually easiest to find just after it powers up OR disconnect and reconnect then search for it on your iPhone. It often takes several attempts

Loudlink have all of their manuals on their website... They do firmware updates as well so maybe worth removing it from the car, update the firmware, plug in when power on and pair immediately.

If you keep struggling contact Loudlink Arnold who runs the show is very helpful.

Thank you once more, you guys are amazing.

My total cost for this has been c.£340 - for the most thorough service you can get really! A normal service doesn't seem to cover half this stuff, and costs several times more.

To give something back would it help if I listed all the parts and part numbers for the service so they're in one place?

From http://scuderiacarparts.com :
Air filter - Part number 186183 £35.62
Oil filter - Part number 188814 £18.30
1xSump crush washer (part number 10261860)
1xOil tank drain crush washer/gasket (part number 675000691?)
1x OR gasket (part number 133938)
2x Gear drain box fill washer (part number 10263460)
1x gearbox oil filter washer (part number 11199277)
1x Gearbox oil filter o ring (part number: 182119)
The washers total about £10.

From Opie Oils:
Oil - Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 x 8 litres £54.16
Gearbox oil - Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W90 x 4 litres £50.33
Coolant - Motul Ungul Optimal car antifreeze. Phosphate-free (VITAL), x 5 litres £20.79
Denso IU24 spark plugs x8 £63.04
Pollen filter - Denso cabin filter DCF046K £10.92

Specialist Tools:
Laser 4236 86mm 18 flute oil filter wrench, £7.31 Ebay

500ml oil suction gun - £4.67

Hard to reach any other conclusion after some research.
Apparently the oil (BOT270A) was developed specifically for AM...!

I think it's intentional... if it is constantly broadcasting a pairing signal then anyone could connect and f with you. However it is very annoying when you are on the move and your passenger says "can I connect my phone and play music?". That said with my old F30 BMW 318d you could not pair a new phone while on the move and that was down to safety reasons...

The Yatour is so similar I think it is the same board from the same factory in China that Loudlink contracted it out to - these sorts of copies are what Chinese companies are known for but I am just speculating :)
