Be honest please.

Does anyone actually buy there own cars anymore?

Most posts on here talk about good deals and 0% or PCP etc.

I've never purchased a car on finance or not owned my own car but it seems I must be in a small minority now?

And me, although we did used to buy the wife's car on 0% finance (through her company scheme) with the car allowance she had due to opting out of a company car.

Rent a depreciating asset....... what's the point in paying out cash when you can run it on monthlies and/or lease a new car? All my older/classic cars are owned outright as they are appreciating. The others no, part deposit/part finance. Each to their own, does it matter?

Fiat: paid in cash and owned outright.

Vantage: bought from an indie who had it on SoR for around 15% below dealer price on a 3 year HP deal with an extrordinarily low interest rate via an independent broker. Will pay the balance, refinance or sell in three years. Total cost of car + finance over the term is marginally less than the windscreen price of the same spec car in a main dealer, i.e. about the same as one would actually cost. Monthly price is about the same as a nice Euro-box without options. Yeah, ok, the deposit amount was a shade larger, but you get the idea.

When we need a bigger car for moving shite or people (or both) round the country for some reason or other: rent one. The savings from not having a boring car I don't want and would seldom use covers around 1/2 to 2/3 of the monthly cost of the Vantage.

And that's a glimpse into the inner workings of my man maths calculator.

What brings it home to me is the sheer number of 17/18 plate cars on people's drives even here in Wakefield, some have four cars on there, all new or nearly new. OK they're Euro-boxes but when I think back to the shiiite my dad had to drive in 70's, 6 year old Maxi's and Princesses that were bolloxed at 50k miles but we were so poor back then we didn't have one penny to rub together.

In fact, I didn't have any clothes at all until I was nine, then my dad bought me a cap so I could look out of the window.....

If I had to wait until I had saved up for each car I would still be walking now. By the time I have saved up it would have increased in cost and my savings would be worth less due to the piddly rates offers from the banks.

So like most I part pay on HPIetc.

However the GS will be one purchase worth close to the same as it was purchased for (taking into consideration all costs).. So maybe the next one will be cash.

Haven't financed or leased a car in over 25 years, we buy what we can afford. I have only ever bought one new car and short of winning the lottery I can't see that happening again.

We do have a Motorbility car which is in fact a lease car funded from ours sons disability allowance.

How do you rub one penny together?

PS My dad had a test drive in a Princess back in the day with me in the back - it broke down.

My cars are mainly old, so I probably don't count...

My Mini (not arrived yet, 2016 car) bought on a loan with a fairly hefty deposit - I borrowed because I hadn't planned on my Alfa getting written off (or sold for another year or so)

Prior to that, the only car I've ever financed was my Elise 11.5 years ago.
Panda bought cash.
Maserati bought cash.
(previous) Alfa bought cash.

The Mini is newer than anything I've ever owned though. I tend to hang onto cars for too long, that might change with the Mini. If it does, I can see it being the start of PCP deals and new cars every 3-4 years..

As you say each to their own. No it doesn't matter. I was just asking if people buy their cars anymore as there seems to be a lot that just pay monthly fees. I may be old fashioned but I like to own my car and not pay for it monthly.

It's a cultural as well as a financial shift. I don't own records or cassettes or CDs any more either. I use Spotify or the stuff that somehow seems to land on my phone etc etc, using a big magical cloud thing. I do, however, own my house. Well, most of it.
