, can I charge from engine bay terminal?

4200 GranSport

Taken reg plate lights out to try and ease the key in barrel, no joy.

Wondering if there is a way to get some current into the battery enough not to turn the car over but enough to enable the remote to unlock the boot latch?

If the key fits into the barrel ok but wont turn you need to push down slightly on the boot lip and as long as the barrel isnt seized up the key should then turn to open the boot.

If it is seized then spray with wd40 and leave to soak then try again.

Thanks for idea but yeah I’ve given that option a go but the amount of rotation I get from the key is very small. Possibly only moves a mm. If that. I think the barrel is seized (job for another day!)

Might have pushed down a bit much a cracked a rib!

You'll need two people , spray thoroughly in side with WD 40 or similar , use a set of adjustable spanner to hold what is left of the blade securely , whilst the first person is bearing heavily down on the boot twist the blade back and forth in little movements until you increase the turn sufficiently for the first person gently release his pressure off the boot, if its seized it will be very difficult to do by oneself

thanks, i was trying to myself bearing down on the lid and turning after a liberal application of gt85. i think i am going to try the charging the battery via the cigar lighter route, just enough to get the lid open and then fix all the locking mechanism retro.
thanks

On the bulkhead under the bonnet, near side there is the junction block from the battery where it splits to the starter and altenator. You can charge back from this point and a good earth.

Do it on a low trickle otherwise the altenator could smoke if you go in too fierce

That should give you power to open the boot.

Obvs get that lock out, stripped and cleaned.

When you take the key apart to put the blade back in be very, very careful you don’t lose the black chip, they fall out and then the car will turn over but fail to start and you will need a new key

Good luck

I’m thinking that there should probably be a cover on this!

Thanks Matt

Should be yes but they are a pig to refit so get tossed over the shoulder by the uninformed

If the battery is dead, the window will not drop when you open the door by manually unlocking with the key.

If you have a voltmeter and measure the voltage across the battery, it will likely confirm it is goosed. Once the voltage falls below 12.0V and stays at that level for some time, the battery cannot be revived.

If you open the door and no courtesy light comes on, the key inserted and turned to position 1 and no warning lights come on, then you want to replace the battery - for a Gransport, either Bosch S5008 or Varta E44. Both are premium 'silver range' with a 5 year warranty.

Consider getting a CTEK MXS 5.0 trickle charger and conditioner. It is around £80 but well worth it. Both my cars are on CTEK when laid up for six months. Personally, I'd ignore anyone who says not to keep them on charge all the time. I have mine on charge for 6 months continually - for 10 years on the Porsche (Bosch S5) and the Gransport for 6 years.

You'll need the radio code after changing the battery if you have the stock Becker unit.

I managed to close my boot with disconnected battery and key barrel was seized as well. I removed the left numberplate light and the black rubber weather cover above and then it is possible to reach the cable at the back of the key barrel and pull it. This will open the boot.
