If it’s soft close it’s to provide better sealing as it puts more pressure on the seal than a conventional latch.

I cant remember if it was... My Ghibli has that auto soft close but also a conventional latch

Continental had the same. The Left pondians would sometimes try to ask how to disable it because they thought there was a risk to children....

Its more common that you expect. The C6 Corvette had them and they usually have a manual backup mechanism.

I’m not exactly sure why they chose this setup maybe its a design choice to hide door handles, but then again cars like the Testarossa and 916 GTV proved that you can do that with conventional door mechanisms.
