Auto folding door mirrors

Today I finished my project to make the door mirrors fold when locking the car and unfold when unlocking it. Not seen this done before on a Granturismo so I was keen to get it working.

No other functions are affected so the mirrors still close using the joystick on the drivers door as before.

Total cost about £10.

It was a pain to do as the doors talk to each other via canbus but now I've worked it out it would take a couple of hours from scratch.

Hope you like it!

That looks like a bloody good idea, but not sure that your link is working?

Not sure why. It works for me but I had to download it. Try again and let me know if it works now.

Brilliant. And you car unlocks on voice control? How did you do that? ;)

I bought a universal mirror folding thingy from eBay for just over £6.

That was the easy bit!

The unit takes a signal from the lock/unlock on the drivers door solenoid and then sends a 5 second 12v to the door mirror close/open circuit.

It gets both a constant and switched 12v so when the ignition is on, the unit is in bypass mode and the joystick works as before.

So far so good.

I assumed that because the joystick for both mirrors was on the drivers door, I could actuate the passenger mirror from the same wiring but I couldn't because the signal goes from the drivers door computer to the passenger door computer. These are canbus signals on a 5v line.

So, easy to get the drivers mirror working but not the passenger one.

To make that work, I had to splice the circuit and feed 4 wires through the drivers door, across the car and into the passenger door where I could splice that side and bypass the canbus signals.

Sounds complicated and took me 3 days to figure it all out but actually it's really simple now. I reckon I could do another one within 2 hours now I know which wire is which.

The unit also has a smart mode whereby it will fold the mirrors when locking the car and unfold them when turning on the ignition rather than unlocking but I prefer the way I have it set up.

That sounds like a proper faff. Just a thought, could you put a second module in the passenger door?

You could but you would have to get switched 12v into there which doesn't exist in the door loom so if you are going to feed cabling through, may as well use the one unit.

Thanks for clearing that up. So if there is no switched 12v then the joystick doesn’t work?

The joystick sends signals to the door computer which is a 5v canbus baseline.

The way I have fitted it means the joystick works exactly as it did before because I splice in after the door computer.

Thanks. What I was getting at was, if I don’t have a switched live, that means the joystick wouldn’t work as it doesn’t reconnect the door computer to the mirror motor? Just getting my head around it as you’ve done an awesome job and I want!

If you don't have a switched live then the unit will not work and you are correct, the joystick won't fold the mirrors as the signal now goes through the new unit. The other mirror functions will work, just not the folding.
I used the cigarette lighter circuit in the fuse box for the switched live.

Does that make sense?

To summarise, if connected as I have done then everything works as it should. The joystick can be used to fold the mirrors in and out whilst the vehicle is switched on (as it does now). When the vehicle is switched off, locking the doors folds both the mirrors in and unlocking the doors folds them out again. So nothing lost at all but the benefit of automatic folding/unfolding door mirrors.
As I mentioned, really cheap mod but does take a couple of hours to fit (mainly due to having to remove both door cards and hide the wiring behind the carpets).

Great effort here Mike...not seen this done before so well done on giving it a go and succeeding!
