Funnily enough.... Me too. I had the Bentley and to be fair although it cost me an arm and a leg to run it none of that was engine related. AC, suspension, brakes etc.
The engine was awesome. So I always fancied the idea of the VW. At least VW labour rates are better than Bentley. Plus you can pick these up at sensible money.

That one's a Cat C so perhaps not the best idea, but I love the idea of them.

I'm sure I read somewhere that VW won't touch them now though as the mechanics aren't trained on them, so it's potentially back to Bentley for servicing and parts, which potentially leads to it being Bentley costs with bit Passat looks...! Could just be internet rumours though.

Yeah; LOADS of red flags:

"Cat D in 2008 and we don't know where and why"
"the engine pressure light warning pop up twice and it was cleared after restarting the engine"
"We will recommend the car to be collected by trailer or flat bed to avoid any damage to the engine!!!!!!"

"on the MOT history check and it showed 92465 in 2014 and 99457 in 2017. they both in km (not mile) and we have the original MOT certificate to prove it"

75,000 miles or maybe 140,000 miles:

Love the W engines but they do need specialist knowledge and very few Vw dealers have a clue. LIving near MK helps as they can call on specialists from the manufacturer who are based there.

I think the problem with these is that they are relatively well known as "a Bentley on a budget", and are now pretty old, so have likely been owned by a few folk running them on a shoestring.

...also (possibly stupid question time, or indeed just me being ignorant to autos...) in the 2nd to last photo, the one with the steering wheel and the auto shifter, what's the pedal on the left?

Like the big audis they have to be bought running with no faults at a disposable price so you can just BIn it if you get 12 months out of it and something expensive goes pop , which is what somebody has done with that one
