Attention Ghibli Owners - check air filters!

So, I managed to find some BMC air filters for my Ghibli in Italy. Got round to fitting them tonight.

I'm very pleased I did because the amount of cr$% in the air boxes was phenomenal. Many thousands of dead flies, two Gitanes butts (they must have been there since Le Mans last June), some stuff that looked like a ball of silicone, a moth, and several small plastic balls of packaging material.

It's obvious that the large front vents, without any type of screen, suck up all kinds of rubbish.

What's worse is that it's just back from it's first 12,000 mile service and clearly the dealership didn't consider cleaning/replacing the filters in any way. Haven't checked but I assume it's not in the service schedule for that interval.

My advice to all owners is to take a look and clean this out before something gets sucked into the important parts.

Be careful to keep the originals and swap them back at service time if you do make this upgrade as the dealerships are under strict instructions from Maserati to look out for anything non-standard. Even if they do supply Ferrari F1 cars.

Good job you spotted all of that.

Have you used BMC filters before and if so, is there any noticeable improvement? Just curious why you changed from standard - was it for performance, longevity or both?

We check them here and are always cleaned out thats all usually needed on the petrols but the diesels suck harder and usually we replace as they wont go another stretch.
BMC great filters in my opinion and value for money they are a no brainer.

Used BMC and K&N before. The quality is better than OEM however I doubt there is much advantage when compared to new. Once the paper OEM filters fill with dust and grime, I would expect the aftermarket parts to perform better as they are of a better engineering quality.

In my head, they must improve airflow which must improve combustion. Just as a cold crisp day makes a car feel faster, so improving a critical ingredient of burning must be a good thing.

For £100 or so in the Ghibli (it has a 2 filters, one per side), seems as much like good practice than anything else. A bit like running super in place of regular.

Send those pics to Maser UK with details. Its not like the MD prices are cheap or anything!

Thanks for that, I'll try one out on mine

I wouldn't bother. Maserati UK are not exactly built on a reputation of good customer services. You'd get more likely traction from the main dealer who serviced it.
