Aston Martin depreciation

I keep looking at V12 Astons (previoisly I had a V12 DB7) but depreciation is holding me back.
If I had bought a DB11 when I first looked I would have lost £40k in 18months.
Realistically I would have £60k plus my GTS so all in about 90k.
I don’t want to lose my shirt so discounting the DB11 and thinking Vanquish / Vanquish S or DBS ?
What might depreciate less I ask myself......

Real Vanquish ?
Apologies for ignorance
Early 2001 - 2007 I assume?

Why dont you speak to AM indys and owners on AM fora? Seems a disconnect to ask Italian enthusiasts on an alien marque or limited experience??? We have a few good AM indys here in South Cheshire that are probably better qualified to help.

Lots of people on here whose opinions I respect will have a view as many own / have owned various marques....... all part of the research.

Scaf, I’ve got Astons as well and I have been trying to follow prices on DB11, DBS, Vanquish, Rapide S, and V12V.

The best value used variant, IMO, is the Rapide S. No question. Prices are as low as I think they’re going. Same with DBS but twice the price of a Rapide. Different car though, obviously.

Come April next year I’ll be making the same choice you are so I’ll be interested to hear what you decide.

Good luck.

I looked at the Rapide S before changing my XJ but felt it was over the top for work so upgraded the XJ.
I don’t want another 4 door but looking for a two door GT so the V12 Vantage is also out (a beast of a car though!).
I will keep researching and will go see a few cars, there is an early Vanquish in Chesham which is just round the corner, it’s not a S but looks nice.
Won’t know until the end of October if the money I want to spend will come good or not.

Once they're a few years old they level out.

As with anything, it's the rare cars, or the older 'last of an era' models that hold value well.

I've had a V8V, and would have a V12 Vantage, Vanquish, early or late, or DBS, ideally manual.

Great cars, I love an Aston.

You can own one, enjoy it, and not lose your shirt.

Ironically, I was driving through Cardiff years ago when I'd just looked at an Aston at AM Cardiff, when we heard a Granturismo S go past in traffic. I've been amazed with modern V8 Maserati since, love it. But either AM or Mas' is a great choice.

For me, there's not necessarily a disconnect. Some own both or have had AM in the past.

One of the things that I really like about this forum is the inclusive attitude towards other cars... it's a rare thing, and something we should value.

Ps. A good guide is The Gaydon Era Aston Martin by Grant Neal.

Hard to compare a 2001 Vanquish with a 2018 DB11 though. The latter is very useable and reliable with a lovely interior. The earlier car is not. I suppose it boils down to priorities - is the main criteria purely financial preservation? Or do vehicle dynamics and capabilities matter?

DBS or Vantage V12 both fairly safe places to plant some cash. But as a car to drive regularly and enjoy, I’d prefer a DB11.

Interesting, the DB11’s are gorgeous, I am just glad I didn't buy one 18 months ago, the volante is especially beautiful.
I would definitely use it as it would replace the GTS so average 5k per year, it’s not an investment but I can live with depreciation just not taking a bath so to speak. Mrs Scaf does not like the harsh ride of the GTS so hardly gets in it, which is one reason I may change.

I also want relatively trouble free ( famous last words) so potentially the newer the better......

My mate has just bought a DBS and can't see he will lose much if at all. If it were me it would be DBS or Vanquish.

I agree with rockits. From what you’ve said the DBS or gen2 Vank have the rarity, performance, and reliability you’re looking for. The gen1 Vanquish is lovely but dated and potentially troublesome.

It's hard to say these days but I would probably go with most opinions mentioned....Vanquish as long as you don't spend at the higher end....80/85kish seems to be holding well and that just gets you the later gearbox which I think was 2014....and it's a beautiful car........Original DBS seems a good bet as well at around 75 to 85k maybe. Other would be original V12 Vantage as good ones are around 65k to 75k. The V12S Vantage starts in this bracket so the original seems to be holding up well. Notice DB11's start around 85k with a V12 as well but they probably have further to fall though it they follow the DB9 which they replaced. I would go Vanatge V12 or Vanquish if it was me.

Real Vanquish or a V12 Vantage both seem steady or on the rise.
Bought my Vanquish SDP Gen 1 in 2011 and doubled in value by 2018. This Goodwood article says it’s a good future bet too. When you speak to AML personnel, this is the one they all want. Last of the hand built NP cars in small build numbers with the NA V12. Gearbox issues are overhyped. Yes it’s a very basic hydraulic clutch manual, but lift a little between up shifts and it’s smooth and fine, if not the fastest swapper of cogs. Looks and noise are unbeatable in any modern AM.

If you want old then that’s fine but I would go DB11 and see what deals you can find. Surely there is a £75-80k car out there if you ring round?

If it’s good then go for it but otherwise wait three months as things will be cheaper.
