It does a little but if all of a sudden I find I’ve got a likely flooding issue this weekend I’m going to ring up the guy at the plant supplier I’ve known for 20 years and ask him to get me some pumps, I’m not going to put it out to tender. I know the values are different but the tender process in government probably takes 12 months.

agree to a degree, but also a good way of getting shafted, always good to get a couple of quotes from whoever that can still do the work/supply goods asap

This is it, really. You're always going to go with people you know. Great analogy

C

Except in the case that I stated, the government did NOT go with a company they knew and had dealt with before. With masks that were normally 29p each, they paid £5.84 each. Now THAT is some mark up. Original contract was circa 200 million although he did not get the whole £50 million that he was promised. It is now a court case between company and the greedy bloke who wants his other 29 million.

The case is detailed here.........

feck me, that's outrageous and to say they provided quote "value to the tax payer" is a fecking joke as well, how on earth can any government official green light such things is beyond me especially as you say they didn't go with a company they knew and dealt with, some fat brown envelopes i suspect were at play here

Said official probably has no supply chain experience, and will not know if a mask costs 5p or £5! They will not live in the real world.

No mention of costs per mask in that article and says he was contracted to supply gloves and gowns. Nothing about masks.

exactly and said official shouldn't be doing/given the job then, it's just beyond belief what is and can be squandered by governments in this way

.....and often then ends up with a highly flawed decision

Not looking good in the way that
14 day death trend is dropping (due to pre-lockdown actions)
14 day case trend is dropping (possibly due to lockdown)
14 day new admissions seems to be flattening (due to pre-lockdown actions)
you mean?

C
The trend line is showing still rising up over the last 14 days, not down?

And do you know what they were selling for at that time? His cost price? Just curious

beyond belief what is and can be squandered by governments in this way

While emotionally I agree, what was the market price of masks? What if by not going through this guy they ended up paying £7 a mask and they arrived next month?

We'll never know

No, I don't know what they were paying for them, doubt they released that information.

are we talking about these blue surgical type masks ?? i assume they cost pennies to manufacture in Asia, i can get a pack of 50 masks for just over £20 from my local trade electrical outlet and these small suppliers are still making a profit on that figure

You can now. Even though the type of masks may not be totally clear, my point is only what was the price then when everyone and their dog wanted them, and there was not enough supply.

There definitely needs to be an inquiry into how this happened.

Oh completely agree. But that should be based on facts. That we don't have.

who knows what the truth is, was there a deliberate supply issue to hike prices up, were brown envelopes involved, am i sounding like a conspiracy theorist now

Not really. You're asking questions, which I think should be answered. A (proper) conspiracy theorist would have said that the supply issues must have been there to hike up prices and involve brown envelopes. Without any proper evidence.
