Yep, been here, preamp required on my Technics turntable into most amps.

TBF the quality was still stunning with the PreAmp and they don't cost much.

Annoying isn't it.

I've hit a hiccup with my naim
The rega planar 3 worked fine with the marantz but with the naim it's really quiet , even at 100 volume it's barely audible but it is working

I'm wondering if I need a phono pre amp

What's the input you're using on the Naim and what's the cartridge on the RP? As Matt says you probably need a pre-amp and unless you've got a dedicated phono input the equalisation is stuffed as well...

It's only got one analogue input, 4 digital , the guy who had it before was using a technics 1210 because that's what came up on the display when I powered it up. I'll message him to see if he used a pre amp

Yeah, so without knowing exactly what Naim you have, it's highly likely that is a line level input (although it may be switchable) unless it's specifically labeled 'Phono'
That means it's expecting a different voltage (about 10x from memory), than your turntable and it won't be RIAA equalised, so what you do hear is going to sound very tinny.

Phono pre-amp is the thing.

It might be that you have the wrong phono board for your cartridge type. On my NAC82 you can swap the phono board to suit moving magnet or moving coil cartridges. It might be the same on yours.

When I was asking for Loire Valley Recommendations I almost wrote Not Ewan , seems Not Catman , you're a bad bad man :D

Just got the answer from the guy I got it from

All the inputs are line level - there's no phono preamp. You'll need to get an exteral phono stage. I used a NAD, which worked fine.

Bought a preamp , all working perfectly , I remembered seeing 2 advertised on another forum , a behringer and a vivanco delivered for £15 , set the behringer up and it works fine

They were at a price that couldn't be refused , £150 for the lot

If I don't post tomorrow evening I couldn't hide them so I'll be dead

Most people must go through life listening to a £1000 worth of Bose or Sonos and thinking how good it sounds but they really have no idea.

I've barely watched any TV in the last few days because I can't stop listening to it.

It's not even particularly loud, hard to describe , it's like I can hear each individual instrument being played with the vocals over the top.

If i lived in a terraced street i'd be dragging people off the pavement
"Here, come and listen to this " :D

That's the point any system can make sound but when you start to get clear separation your in the big league. Naim separation is the best I have heard which is why I will be replacing my setup this year.

And as you have found Naim Amps almost always need a Phono preamp for vinyl

I buy and sell stuff , a lot of the hifi I buy has issues but I've got a guy that fixes it for reasonable money

A few weeks up a picked a broken bose sounddock 10 , broken in that the lugs that hold the bluetooth adapter in are snapped off , gaffer tape it in and it works , bought a replacement adapter and a chinese remote for it

Fired it up and it sounds really good , much better than I was expecting , I'm not going to be making a profit on it though , my son has just connected his phone up to it so that'll be the last I see of it.

Looked in a charity shop window on wednesday , saw some speakers so went in for a nosey
They were huge B&W DM6 , as I was about to leave I spotted an amp Quad 405 and a Quad 33 preamp
So :D

They weren't charity shop money though unfortunately 67297

30 days refund and 6 months warranty if I can't hear an improvement , only that's not likely at the moment , I thought something was wrong with my phone as it sounded like the caller had a bad cold , only when I switch ears the left one is ok

Not the time to be visiting clinics to find out what's wrong though.
