If you don't want it built on, dig a pond on the land and fill it with Great Crested Newts. Job done.

That'll be £2,000 please.

Hi there, without seeing a plan I can only give you general advice. Is the area of land "landlocked" without access to a road etc? Have you enjoyed access to it over a number of years? Does it form a shortcut with people using it regularly? Depending on the answer to these questions will give a feeling how successful you might be.
If there is any development potential then the Council will probably be required to market the area of land rather than just sell to yourselves.
A wee trip to the Planning dept would be useful and if you are given the honour of actually speaking to someone then you will be advised what land use is possible within your local plan. You should be able to access your local development plan on line.
Knowing what account the land is on would be useful too as you can then focus attention on the relevant councillor and dept official. The dept that owns the land will need to declare it surplus before it can be sold.
Sorry if teaching granny etc and Englandshire processes may well be different but I suspect the principles will be the same as up here.
Looking at the title would be useful and there maybe a reference in your own title if your property ajoins the area of land in question.

Ta!
So yes, it's landlocked. People walk around it on footpath. Very rarely will people walk over it except to let their dogs **** on it.
We don't believe there is any potential. No access for vehicles appears possible. I've sent a sattelite shot. Cheers!

I’ve got access to a website that I can get a copy of the title plan and report if you wish. If you want to DM me the postcode or the satellite shot mentioned then I’ll get hold of them for you. I’m not a lawyer but deal with this sort of stuff regularly so happy to chat them through when I see what they say.

Presuming the council never visits the land maybe you could just put up a flimsy fence around the bit you want adjoining your property, tend it a bit, then after 7 years claim it as your own if they don’t complain.

Note. This advice may be from the internet and therefore nonsense.

That has actually been suggested....by people employed by the council!

i think this only works for land not registered. We successfully did this for the neighbouring plot to my dad’s childhood home for my aunt but we could prove maintenance of it going back 70 years including clearing all the elms following Dutch Elm in the 70’s

It wasn't really high on my list of possibilities on the grounds that it makes stuff hard to sell....

adverse possession, quite tricky and not as straight forward as you may think not to mention times involved 10/12 years and could still be contested, best to keep lines of communication open with the LA
