I was in Moscow at the time, have a listen to Christy Moore (farewell to Pripchat) some time.

Pripyat' - soft sign at the end! Transliteration rules make the little 'b' you see at the end of Russian words into a ' - to indicate a softening of the preceding consonant. Makes the 't' sound a more like a quick 'tyer' - halfway between a ch and a t. Russian Припять. Think Ukrainian is bit different.

Also Chernobyl' is similar plus it contains the very-hard-for-English-native-speakers 'bl' sound described in one book as 'like saying 'uh' while being punched in the stomach'. Russian Чернобыль.

When I next win QOTD I'm doing one on Russian verbs of motion, the difficult genitive plural inflection of nouns and adverbs and Stalin, was he all bad?

Romani eunt domus....

At a friends house (I do not have SKY as I refuse to accept the Murdoch clan) and we watched to the first set of adverts of the first episode.
I could not take any more because I am a bit of a wussie.
Must admit though it looked well done....................... sorry

That was the best TV I've watched in a long time , HBO has made some brilliant TV over the decades , Sopranos, band of brothers, boardwalk empire and this is up there with them

They would have been really young in the 80s as well!

My partner, a Soviet by birth, reckons there's no way he'd have spoken so critically at the end of the last episode, just I think from what I've read this part was totally made up anyway.

Probably(Maybe not) pure fiction but the Mick Jagger / Martin Scorsese drama Vinyl is a good watch , it's a bit like The Sopranos bought a record company

There's Deutschland 83 too, Deutschland 89 isn't out yet. My Mrs is a German speaker, we had to watch Heimat and Alexanderplatz. With no subbies.....

Just finishes D83. Enjoyed it but kept seeing Captain Sensible when the break titles came up.
