I and probably most of the world had no idea how close we came to a global catastrophe when Chernobyl exploded, hours from a thermonuclear explosion if some very brave men hadn't died horrible deaths stopping it

Best thing I've seen on TV in a while, the level of incompetence and the cover up is astounding.

Well worth watching

4 parts have been on so far , last part next Tuesday

My elder son (nearly 18) thinks it is absolutely brilliant. I intend to watch it soon.

Avidly, having worked on reactors its especially compelling....

Also had graphite thrown at me, some mad some mad lads back then, the graphite dance. We all got away with it (so far) but the chaps who worked in the ponds almost always died shortly after retirement with some sort of cancer. I refused to go in there...

Haven't seen it, but my daughter was astounded by the level of incompetence. I did see a documentary a while ago about the efforts that were going on to make the site safe, as the original measures are beginning to fail, that was fascinating, cant remember what it was called unfortunately.

It is brilliantly chilling. The sort of numbers they are talking about in terms of contamination can only mean we have all been affected to some degree or other.

I read that it is a dramatisation and that some of the characters are amalgamations of quite a few different people to make it more watchable but boy is the sacrifice of ordinary Russians clear and sobering.

I remember during a Physics A level class measuring the background radiation level, only one week before the accident.
We did the same again a few weeks later, after the accident, it had doubled.
I was in the Cairngorms, getting rained on, just as the radioactive cloud moved north.

Well, Ukrainians mostly! Soviets certainly!

My best mate is a nuclear engineer , in the 90s he had to go to eastern Europe to assess the safety of their nuclear power stations because they were joining the eu , he said the group were in a power station 3/4 of the way down a long corridor with double doors at each end being escorted by the local engineers when the doors they were walking towards opened and 2 guys with full radiation suits walked through them
All the international guys hit the wall and started looking at their badges , one guy ran the whole length of the corridor to get away

The escorting engineers thought it was really funny
No no they are going to the reactor building not coming back,

Film Badge won’t tell you anything until it’s been processed and then it’s too late if you got a dose.

These guys should have been carrying gammacoms - ie the machine that goes blip, blip, blip. We had to collect one and book it out when going on or near the reactors. Give it back after and your dose was recorded against your name. Was all in Microsieverts for us, not Röntgens, never bothered asking what the difference was..

Amazing, utterly chilling but thoroughly engrossing with some stunning acting too. What gets me is that the three men who saved the World received little acknowledgement.

Why do they use the terminology "Roentgens" instead of Sieverts? That's what we learnt at school for doses measured using a Geiger counter. One can only assume it was a legacy standard or very Eastern Bloc?
